The Position

Sonoma Water Heavy Equipment Technicians maintain and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment, including: Combo sewer cleaning, tanker, dump, and utility body trucks; video vans; large and small trailers; forklifts (electric, propane, and diesel), electric scissor lifts; towable pumps and generators; excavators; backhoes; skid steers; tractors with mowing equipment; brush chippers; and off-road utility vehicles. Sonoma Water vehicles and equipment are powered by a variety of fuel sources including diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative fuels.  
 
On a typical day, this position performs scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment at the fleet facility. Work priorities can change when emergency repairs are identified. Occasionally, there is fieldwork at remote locations either for emergency repairs or normal maintenance where it is not practical to transport to the fleet facility.

As a member of Sonoma Water's small but mighty fleet team, it is critical for the ideal candidate to be agile, flexible, and adaptable to address changing and competing priorities. The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Extensive experience diagnosing and repairing medium and heavy-duty trucks and off-road equipment including loaders, backhoes, and trailers
  • Thorough knowledge regarding the maintenance and repair of diesel equipment particulate matter, emission devices, and systems
  • Experience performing California Highway Patrol (CHP) Biennial Inspection of Terminals (BIT) inspections
  • Experience with computerized maintenance and repair software systems
  • The ability to perform acetylene, arc, and electric welding on various types of metal
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
About Sonoma Water
 
Sonoma Water is a special district formed by the California State Legislature in 1949 and is responsible for providing a safe and reliable water supply to its customers in Sonoma and Marin counties. Sonoma Water also maintains 75 miles of flood control channels and provides sanitation services. Employing approximately 250 employees, Sonoma Water consists of five divisions including Engineering and Resource Planning, Environmental Resources and Public Affairs, Water/Wastewater Operations, Maintenance, and Administrative Services. Sonoma Water supports the concept of environmental sustainability, focusing on renewable power sources, and strives to be a leader in its water conservation and fishery restoration programs.
 
Employees of Sonoma Water are employees of a special district and are not subject to the provisions of the Civil Service Ordinance of the County of Sonoma. The formal title for this position is Heavy Equipment Technician. 

We are currently recruiting to fill one Heavy Equipment Technician. Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education, experience and training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, this would include two years of experience in the repair of a wide variety of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy trucks.

Licenses: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential functions of the position. 

All employees in this class must obtain a State of California Class A commercial driver's license by June 30, 2019. Upon appointment to a position in this classification, employees must obtain a State of California Class A commercial driver's license by the completion of the probationary period.

Certifications: California Council on Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET) I and II Course certificates are required by the completion of the probationary period. Possession of the ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck Certification is highly desirable.

Special Requirement: Possession of the small and large hand tools necessary to perform all assigned work. License for Emission Control Testing and Certification is required for some assignments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: the methods, tools, testing instruments, parts, and equipment used in the major repair, replacement, installation, and overhaul of on/off road equipment, and medium/heavy duty trucks; safety diagnosis, and preventative maintenance inspection methods and techniques; techniques and methods of repairing, replacing, installing, and overhauling on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, and related component parts, including diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel engines, carburetors, hydraulic and electrical systems, fuel injection systems, transmissions, and differentials; the theory, care, and operation of diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel powered engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy duty trucks.

Ability to: diagnose and locate mechanical and safety problems, and determine appropriate corrective action; repair, replace, remove, install, and overhaul of medium/heavy duty trucks and on/off road equipment, including emergency vehicles, man lift vehicles, park maintenance equipment, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (both stationary and mobile), and related component parts without direct supervision; research and identify appropriate replacement parts; effectively use hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and machines in the repair, replacement, removal, installation, and overhaul of  on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, and related component parts; perform emission control testing and certification; read and write English; interpret manufacturers' specifications; follow oral and written instructions; use computer system to access and maintain accurate records, including updates to inventory records, parts orders, and time records,; perform basic arithmetic calculations; work effectively with customers and vendors; work under varying field and weather conditions and, occasionally, on weekends.
