CRIMINAL DIVISION - SEA
 
Salary: Range 49 - $30.6775 (Step One) - $38.8857 (Step Ten) hourly* [2021 Rates]
Hours:  8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location:  Seattle Courthouse
Reports to:  Kelly Rosa

This is a regular paralegal position (not special duty)

This position requires the Paralegal to be in the office as needed for trial and other office related tasks.  Telecommuting is available according to the needs of the unit. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.

This Paralegal position provides support for a trial intense workload with a dedicated team that handles a wide range of felonies.

Job Duties

  • Assist prosecutors in all phases of trial preparation; prepare, process and e-file legal documents; generate, process, print and send witness letters and subpoenas for service.
  • Maintain PbK to reflect updated witness information, court dates, and trial and disposition information; manage daily work requests within “MyView” in PbK.
  • Scan, prepare, bates stamp and disseminate discovery, including pro se discovery where specific electronic guidelines are followed.
  • Redact video and audio in programs such as Windows Movie Maker, evidence.com and Audacity; redact discovery with Adobe Pro
  • Request jail calls, upload calls in Jail Call Database and review calls as needed.
  • Create exhibits, set-up equipment for trial; attend witness interviews and take notes as needed.
  • Request interpreters or translation services as needed.
  • Maintain overview of the status of each assigned deputy prosecutor’s caseload.
  • Communicate and serve as a liaison with deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, defense investigators, court personnel, witnesses, victims and other agencies
  • Coordinate witness interviews and testimony; arrange travel and housing arrangements.
  • Review and interpret legal documents and explain legal procedures to victims, witnesses and the public
  • Perform related work as required.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment and the ability to anticipate needs and appropriately respond.  
  • Skills in excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently; strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with and respond in a positive, experienced and helpful manner with diverse individuals, including victims, witnesses, complainants, deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, judges, court personnel, defense attorneys, defense investigators and other agencies.
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to make decisions and initiate action.
  • Proven time management skills to effectively and accurately handle multiple tasks within short deadlines.
  • Ability to handle routine emergency situations under pressure and to assume unscheduled and unexpected responsibilities. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion involving sensitive matters.  
  • Possess skills in using computers and a variety of software such as PbK, Word, Adobe Pro, Excel, PowerPoint and Access; familiarity with JABS, JBRS, SAWS, KC Script, People Map/Accurint and other criminal justice programs a plus.  
  • Desire to learn a wide variety of new skills and be able to adapt to, and work comfortably in, a fast-paced work environment and have knowledge of legal office practices and procedures, particularly in the Criminal Division.  
  • Flexible and possess the ability to work both as part of a small team and independently.
  • Receptive to instructions, feedback, and coaching.  
  • Must have demonstrated predictable, reliable and timely attendance.
