Summary

Public Health – Seattle & King County Laboratory is recruiting for a full time Supervising Microbiologist. This position plans and supervises a section of the Public Health Laboratory and conducts and interprets complex and/or hazardous microbiological and serological tests for diagnosis of communicable diseases, environmental sanitation and related research. This position plans and supervises day-to-day operations, trains and monitors staff, and conducts and interprets the most difficult tests.

Job Duties

  • Assign, monitor, evaluate and provide technical instructions and guidance to microbiology staff.
  • Plan and carry out new programs and laboratory procedures.
  • Review all test results and media and reagent quality control data. Evaluate new reagents and media. 
  • Conduct and interpret special complex microbiological and serological tests for pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites. Samples are clinical and blood samples for diagnosis purposes. Conduct various tests when other staff are absent.
  • Report test results to laboratory clients; respond to technical questions.
  • Prepare periodic reports summarizing laboratory activities.
  • Write standard operating procedures for review by laboratory director.
  • Troubleshoot problems with reagents, media, materials and equipment when necessary.
  • Follow safety requirements and guidelines; recognize potential safety hazards and take corrective actions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology, medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological science, and two years laboratory training/experience in microbiology OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform the work.
  • Knowledge of relevant principles and bench-level practices of microbiology and serology, including such fields as mycobacteriology, enteric bacteriology, sexually transmitted bacteriology, environmental bacteriology, serology, immunology and parasitology.
  • Knowledge of procedures, principles and protocols for detection and identification of disease agents.
  • Knowledge of common causes of communicable diseases and methods of transmission and control.
  • Knowledge of regulations and safety, documentation and sterilization practices pertaining to public health microbiology.
  • Knowledge of laboratory hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of use and care of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Knowledge of laboratory principles and applications of Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
  • Knowledge of project and operations management techniques and principles.
  • Skill in observation. 
  • Skill in communications (oral and written).
  • Skill in time management.
  • Skill in supervising, training, leading and mentoring assigned staff and promoting teamwork.
  • Skill in maintaining confidentiality of laboratory information.
  • Skill in promoting mutual respect and acceptance of all workers in a diverse work group.
