The Transition Age Youth Peer Support Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the development of a youth driven system for transitioning aged youth in Washington County Maryland. This position will work to build on youth strengths to increase life skills, leadership, and group activities coordination. General and specific knowledge of youth of transition age (16 - 25 years of age) and treatment within the behavioral health system are recommended.

Wages: $13.50 per hour, 30 -35 hours weekly

Willing to train the ideal candidate, who identifies and relates to, the current experiences of youth of transitioning age, and have had their own personal experience with the behavioral health service system. The salary is based on a 35 hour work week and level of experience with PTO benefits available upon completion of the probationary period.

The Youth Peer Support Coordinator is expected, through training and lived experience, to exercise independent judgment under supervision of the Executive Director of the Office of Consumer Advocates, Inc., in conjunction with the Manager of the Transition Age Youth program at Sheppard Pratt .

Position Requirements: Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Knowledge of current effective approaches being used to assist youth with mental illness and skills in facilitating community integration.
  • Experience working with youth involved in multiple systems.
  • Ability to build partnerships with stakeholders in Washington County.
  • Skills in time management and organizational skills.
  • Provide peer insight for effective interventions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with youth of transition age and to foster a youth driven process.
  • Respect for youth culture and flexibility and patience working with people.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and to take corrective action when needed.
  • Skill in word processing and ability to learn computer skills and programs.
  • Excellent analytical skills and abilities.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective written communication skills.
  • Willingness to participate in training and educational experiences which advance knowledge and skill in providing services to youth with emotional and behavioral disorders.

Professional Requisites: Education and Experience

  • One year of experience working in youth development/leadership activities.
  • Self identifies as a consumer of behavioral health services from a State funded youth serving agency and/or other youth serving systems and preferably from specified age
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record required along with ability to transport oneself to meetings and other events in Maryland. Preferred, but not required.
  • AA Degree in a human service-related field or Bachelors Degree preferred but not required.
  • Ability and willingness to attend meetings, functions in other counties throughout Maryland, and may require overnight stay on occasion.

Conditions of Employment

Employee must be able to perform the duties of the job description as verified by a physician’s statement and the employee’s health statement. The employee must also undergo a criminal background check.

Duties

  • Coordinate the development of and facilitate youth run groups in Washington County for the purpose of youth building relationships and youth increasing leadership skills.
  • Participate in meetings on the local, and state levels as needed.
  • Develop an Operational Plan for the “youth voice”.
  • Provide accurate and timely documentation of services provided.
  • Educate adults and professionals on the importance of youth consumer involvement.
  • Attend trainings to enhance personal skill sets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
