Job Description

This position is a 12month (CY) nontenure track position in the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences and is based in Blacksburg, VA. The individual will be expected to work closely with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) staff in developing educational and training programs and materials related to soils and septic systems. The individual will also conduct applied research projects designed to support the educational and training mission of the position.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. in soil science or a closely related discipline is required. Demonstrated abilities to work independently, good communication skills and proficiency in preparing written technical reports are also required.

Preferred Qualifications

Desirable qualifications include understanding of soil science; onsite sewage treatment and disposal; training principles, adult learning; and environmental health regulations and laws. Clearly demonstrated capabilities to assess soil and landscape properties through field soil survey, geospatial data analyses, and laboratory analyses of soil samples. Skills and experience in making field onsite descriptions of soil morphologic features and have demonstrated the ability to make interpretations from the soil features regarding the suitability of the site for an onsite sewage system.
