Service Helper 2

Position Summary: Kitsap Transit is recruiting for a Service Helper (2) and will also be creating an eligibility list for future openings. This position will be responsible for fueling transit coaches and performing other servicing duties, such as checking and dispensing oil, coolant and transmission fluid. The person in this position will also be responsible for checking for power steering fluid leaks and tire pressure; adding air to tires, sweeping and cleaning the interior and exterior of buses, moving buses to be serviced, providing roadside service, vehicle trade-outs and completing maintenance records. After training, you will be expected to wear protective gear and clean vehicles or other equipment that may have been exposed to body fluids of passengers who may be infected with blood borne pathogens.

This position reports to the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor.

Salary Range: The Service Helper 2 position starts at $21.07/hr, $21.89 /hr after 6 months, and $23.26 after one year.

Hours of Work: The Vehicle Maintenance department has several shifts on weekdays and Saturdays. Shifts are assigned on the basis of seniority.

QUALIFICATIONS

Kitsap Transit employees who wish to apply must have a satisfactory performance and attendance record. Kitsap Transit Operators with any of the following criteria in the past twelve months are excluded from recruitment opportunities:

  • a current Decision Making Leave or higher in the Safety category
  • more than two held customer complaints
  • more than four unscheduled absences
  • more than two late reports

Education and Experience: This position requires a minimum of six months experience servicing and cleaning vehicles. Experience driving a large vehicle (2 ton truck, 35-40 foot bus, etc.) and knowledge of diesel engines is desirable. You must possess, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a WA State driver's license and an excellent driving record; we will check your driving records for the past three years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The following list represents a few highlights of what is needed to be successful in this position:

  • You must have knowledge of vehicle cleaning and servicing procedures, mechanical hand tools, and safe working practices.
  • You must be able to work with operators, passengers and staff in a courteous manner, work independently, follow written and oral instructions, and accurately complete simple records.
  • You will need to provide proof of US citizenship in order to drive into the Controlled Industrial Area (CIA) of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, outside agencies and the general public.
  • Work independently and interact effectively and positively as a team member.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including patience and courtesy, with team members and members of the public.
  • React with sound judgment under stress while doing several things at once.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: You must be able to perform work in a standing position 65% of the time with walking estimated about 35% of the shift. You must also have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds without assistance and lift up to 75 pounds with assistance, climb ladders up to 12 feet, perform frequent balancing, stooping, reaching, grasping, and fingering actions. About 75% of your time will be spent outside in all weather conditions. You must be able to operate transit vehicles and large service equipment.

Other Requirements: Must be able to acquire and maintain a Class B Washington State commercial driver's license with a passenger endorsement and air brake restriction removed within 120 days of hire. Must maintain a good driving record throughout employment. The incumbent must be able to obtain a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard security clearance.
