Professor of Practice — Teaching Multilingual Learners

The Education Department of Wheaton College (Massachusetts) invites applications for a Professor of Practice to begin in the Fall of 2024. Professors of Practice are full-time teaching faculty who possess expertise and achievements in a field of instruction. We seek an experienced and dynamic educator with a focus on teaching multilingual learners and a dedication to the preparation of undergraduate students who pursue a pre-professional degree in the context of a liberal arts college. Candidates with backgrounds in culturally-diverse institutions are especially encouraged to apply. In a continuing effort to maintain and enrich an intellectually rich and inclusive learning environment, the department actively encourages applications from members of population groups that have been historically-underrepresented in higher education.

The teaching load for this position is three courses per semester, with the possibility of substituting advising and administrative responsibilities for one course. The courses will include an introduction to teaching multilingual learners (ML), an advanced seminar in ML instruction and assessment, and a field-based practicum. There is also the opportunity to develop a course in an area of related interest or expertise. The position entails coordinating a new non-licensure minor in Teaching Multilingual Learners and, over time, developing an additional undergraduate or graduate program that satisfies Massachusetts licensure requirements. Professors of Practice are expected to provide service to the college or/and their department after their first year. Professors of Practice receive initial one-year contracts, become eligible for a two-year contract after their second year, and can seek promotion to Senior Professor of Practice and ongoing three-year contracts after their fourth year. Professors of Practice receive funding to support their professional development. The Education Department plays a leadership role in the college’s campaign to create an antiracist community through inclusive excellence in teaching and advising. Individuals interested in this position should be prepared to contribute to this departmental and campus-wide work.

Applicants should submit a letter of application and curriculum vitae. The letter should include a description of how the applicant’s teaching philosophy and commitment to antiracist practices will inform their approach to preparing individuals to engage in multilingual education. Additionally, the letter should provide specific examples of how the applicant’s teaching and professional experiences have enacted those ideals, and how their expertise will support the college’s commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Three reference letters (at least one of which should address teaching effectiveness) will be requested later in the process.

A review of applications will begin on November 27, and will continue until the position is filled.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in education, second language acquisition, or a related field
  • Three years of experience teaching multilingual learners (PreK to grade 12)
  • Familiarity with current best practices in the field of multilingual learning
  • Ability to supervise student-teachers
  • Desire to mentor undergraduate students
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in culturally-diverse schools or community organizations
  • College teaching experience
  • Familiarity with certification requirements for teaching ML in the U.S. or abroad
  • Experience as a ML administrator or policymaker
  • Doctorate or post-masters training in education, second language acquisition, or a related field
  • Interest in teaching foundations of education courses and/or an interdisciplinary first year seminar on a topic of personal interest
