Position Title: Academic Advisor (Academic and Career Advisor)

Employment Type: Fulltime, Academic Staff, Salaried

Reports To: The Academic Advisor will report to the Dean of the College of Business, Economics, and Computing/Executive Director Advising and Academic Support.

Pay Range: Starting at $40,000 (commensurate with experience)

Professional Academic & Career Advisors are positioned in the Advising & Career Center and in each of the four academic colleges to provide high quality academic advising and career development assistance to active UW-Parkside students, transfer students, and prospective students. Academic & Career Advisors will assist students in transitioning to the University, assessing academic skills, and exploring academic and career options, and will partner with advisees to develop individualized plans for academic success. This advising position will be housed in the College of Business, Economics, and Computing and will advise majors within the College. Academic & Career Advisors are instrumental in fostering an inclusive and engaged campus community in support of academic excellence and student success.


Essential Job Functions
  • Serve as main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriation institutional resources.
  • Assist students with the development and execution of a personal academic plan.
  • Provide guidance to students in navigating the various aspects of their academic experience, including understanding curriculum, university policies and procedures, and opportunities for extra- and co-curricular engagement.
  • Maintain expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum.
  • Review and maintain major requirement guides, and degree-completion plans.
  • Assist students with identifying opportunities for career development, including internships, volunteer work, community-based learning, student organization involvement and research partnerships.
  • Assist students with developing key competencies of career readiness and engage students in career development activities.
  • Participate in regular university-wide advising meetings
  • Engage with student experience academic difficulty and encourage use of necessary student support services.
  • Support college/university orientation and retention efforts
  • Proactively engage with students, respond to their needs, and refer to appropriate resources when necessary
  • Facilitate student scheduling and registration for courses; provide registration assistance at all new and transfer student orientations
  • Advise prospective and new transfer students; provide possible transfer equivalencies using Transferology
  • Maintain accurate electronic records of interactions with students through the Navigate system
  • Serve on committees as needed.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • 1 - 3 years of experience in advising, teaching, counseling or related field.
