Patient Care:
  • Provide education and support for patients and their support persons regarding their pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum care
  • Support mothers to feed and care for their newborns in the manner of their choice
  • Provide breastfeeding education and support as well as assist with the lactation support group meetings
  • Assist and encourage staff with early initiation of skin to skin care and initiation of breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth
  • Document all aspects of care provided
Communication:
  • Maintain open communication with multidisciplinary team members to provide holistic, family-centered care to the patients
  • Provide timely and accurate communication with nursing staff on all shifts, ancillary staff, physicians, and patients and families
Staff Education
  • Provide means for staff development and on-going competency to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Provide education offerings including Breastfeeding Management and Support training that aligns with the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiatives and verify staff competency
  • Assist with annual staff education/review regarding breastfeeding
  • Serve as preceptor for nurses during shift(s) scheduled for orientation
  • Serve as a resource for breastfeeding education and support for clinical staff
Quality
  • Participates in evidenced-based quality improvement initiatives and assist with unit-based performance improvement projects
  • Participate in constant survey readiness activities and assist during accreditation surveys
  • Collaborates with supervisors to co-lead the Baby Friendly Continuity of Care subcommittee
  • Assist with education programs to promote breastfeeding and the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
Patient Experience
  • Project professional, caring and helpful image to staff, patients, family members and visitors
  • Plan care considering patient's needs and preferences
  • Offer support for breastfeeding mothers of newborns after discharge by offering/overseeing breastfeeding support groups and/or informing patients of available community resources for lactation support
Self-Development:
  • Maintain competency to ensure safe and effective patient care
  • Completes all annual competency requirements
  • Stays current with lactation practices and Baby Friendly initiatives
Regulatory Knowledge:
  • Complies with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements
  • Adheres to NMHS/NMMC policies, procedures, and guidelines
Job Knowledge:
  • Associates Degree in Nursing required, Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Mississippi required
  • Basic Life Support certification required
  • Certified Lactation Consultant certification required
  • International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) preferred
  • Minimum of two years of previous perinatal nursing experience required
  • Minimum of two years of experience with teaching/ nursing preceptorship preferred
  • Working knowledge of computers and software programs, required
  • Working knowledge of office equipment (scanners) and audiovisual equipment, preferred
