 Join the County of Sonoma Regional Parks as a Park Planner II! 

Salary starting at $37.93/hour ($79,164/year), a cash allowance of $600/month, and a competitive total compensation package!* 

The Sonoma County Regional Parks Department is looking for a Park Planner II to conduct park planning studies to design and expand parks, park facilities, structures, and trails in unincorporated Sonoma County. As a Park Planner II, you will conduct preliminary field investigations of proposed parks, trails, bikeways, waterways and recreation sites to assess suitability and potential usage. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Soliciting and negotiating consultant services, evaluating and rating proposals, and negotiating contracts for services
  • Evaluating public demand and usage needs for park improvements and adding new park properties
  • Preparing land acquisition reports along with site and facility development plans
  • Representing the department in public meetings and presentations to other community groups and agencies
The ideal candidate for this position will have a desire to be a contributing member of an interactive team and a passion for improving and using our parks and recreation areas. The ideal candidate will also possess:
  • Project management skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with land acquisition and zoning
  • An understanding of public funding procedures
  • Strong analytical and organization skills

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide for possession of stated knowledge and abilities. A typical example would be two years of experience in park planning, planning, architecture or landscape architecture.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: park planning terminology, principles and techniques; recreational planning principles; principles, methods and techniques of land use and environmental and site planning.

Working knowledge of: land acquisition, land transfer and zoning principles; public project funding principles and procedures; construction procedures; park development processes and procedures; practices of contacts preparation and administration.

Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public officials, private consultants, contractors and the public; research, gather, organize and analyze information; write and speak persuasively; present recommendations and alternative proposals.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.
Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.
