Job Summary:

The Behavioral Health Services Pharmacist will provide clinical and administrative pharmacy services to patients receiving inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care at one or more of Upstate University Hospital’s facilities. This includes, but not limited to, adult/adolescent Psychiatry Units at the newly established Hutchings Facility and Upstate University Hospital (Downtown/Community Campuses).

Activities include but are not limited to: consultative services with providers, medication profile reviews, drug use evaluations, multidisciplinary rounds, transition of care medication coordination, quality improvement projects and patient/caregiver education. Opportunities exist to engage with addiction services providers and/or other health system-based clinic services. Medication validation activities and oversight/coordination of medication distribution activities at various sites are required.


The Pharmacist also interprets medication orders and prescriptions to ensure that they are complete, safe, rational, and compatible with institutional policy. Prepares compounds and dispenses medications for inpatient and ambulatory care use. This includes the preparation of injectable sterile products. Dispenses Pharmacy related items. Performs duties in all areas of Pharmacy to include inpatient , ambulatory care and satellites. Provides information to health care practitioners to promote the rational use of medications. Provides drug monitoring service. Maintains Pharmacy records by law and institutional policy. Interprets policy. Interprets policy and procedures for hospital staff. Participates in teaching programs for hospital staff. Participates in Pharmacy Departments Quality Assurance Programs.  

Minimum Qualifications:

B.S. in Pharmacy or Pharm.D., NYS license and registration - or eligible - required; completion of PGY1 Pharmacy residency or equivalent experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy residency, Board Certification in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice, and/or equivalent previous psychiatric pharmacy practice experience preferred.
