Position Purpose
Provides oversight and leadership for the effective administration, implementation and curricular innovation and delivery of the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree offerings at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth (Geisel). Optimizes MPH curriculum continuity, efficiency, effectiveness, and ensures compliance with all MPH program accreditation requirements with input from the MPH curriculum committee. Leads institutional effort in partnering with Geisel’s faculty and academic leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality, robust curricula and high student satisfaction with Geisel’s MPH programs. Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education (ADHSE) and with support from the Educational Affairs team, leads the evaluation, exploration and development of all MPH-related education program offerings on behalf of Geisel. Additionally, the Assistant Dean develops and implements methods and procedures for accomplishing short- and long-term program initiatives and goals and evaluates and reports upon the degree to which program objectives are achieved.

This is a 0.5FTE administrative leadership position within the Educational Affairs organization at Geisel with the scheduled level of FTE support expected to remain in place through FY25 (i.e., June 30, 2025). The scheduled FTE for the Assistant Dean position may subsequently be modified based on (then) anticipated program needs, and after consultation with the Associate Dean – Health Sciences Education and the Dean of Educational Affairs.

  • PhD/DrPH or equivalent terminal degree required or equivalent experience leading academic programs in the domains of public health, health care delivery science, or a related health-focused field.
  • Experience in higher education administration and/or responsibility for program oversight in graduate level settings.
  • Meets minimum requirements for a ladder faculty appointment in accordance with Geisel’s Appointments, Promotions and Titles (APT) policies.
  • Proven organizational leadership, management, team building, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty, administrators, senior institutional leadership, and a broad range of internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and scholarship.
  • Knowledge of the various modalities for delivery of teaching and learning, including online, hybrid and in person.
  • Excellent skills in financial planning and management, problem solving, negotiation, and mediation.
  • Ability to constructively handle difficult or sensitive situations with students and faculty.
  • Ability to articulate ideas and concepts and to disseminate information relevant to the program both internally and externally.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experienced and familiarity with current health sciences MPH programs.
  • Meets requirements for a ladder faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor or higher in accordance with Geisel’s Appointments, Promotions and Titles (APT) policies.
  • Experience managing small teams in a matrixed organizational environment.
  • Experience working in public health outside of academia.

Description
MPH program and curricular leadership
  • Using detailed knowledge of all necessary aspects of the respective curricula and delivery modalities, provides effective leadership, vision, support, and oversight of all MPH program offerings.
  • Contributes to decision making regarding optimal number and format of MPH degree program offerings, given current market trends.
  • Partners with department chairs, the ADHSE, and educational affairs leadership and administration to recruit and select faculty to deliver high-quality teaching within the MPH degree programs.
  • Partners with department chairs, the ADHSE, and educational affairs leadership and administration to provide data for faculty annual performance reviews and professional development opportunities for faculty teaching within the MPH programs.
  • Chairs and administers the MPH curriculum committee.
  • Establishes curricular education policies, secures curriculum committee approval when needed, and ensures curricular policies are applied consistently and fairly.
  • Establishes and oversees the development of the academic calendar for the MPH programs, in collaboration with the curriculum governance committees and the school’s Registrar, and in collaboration with the educational affairs team.
  • Participates in the assessment of faculty development needs for the delivery of the curricula, communicating needs to the appropriate leadership groups, including Geisel’s Academy, Office of Faculty Affairs and Office of Educational Affairs.
  • Partners with Geisel’s Assessment, Evaluation and Accreditation team for the ongoing evaluation and improvement of all MPH program curricular offerings to ensure program and accreditation requirements, topical relevancy and deliverables are aligned with program and learner expectations. Develops and maintains continuous quality improvement processes to ensure that the best curricula are provided to students.
  • Collaborates with the respective program directors for MPH programs to monitor and support the academic performance of students.
  • Directs and mentors staff members responsible for the daily coordination and administration of the curricula (e.g. respective program directors).
  • Partners with the Office of Educational Affairs to monitor and ensure the appropriate delivery of student-related resources, including academic support services, admissions, marketing, career services, and robust support systems that meet the needs of the programs.
  • Takes an active interest in public health and outreach and engagement efforts in the communities we serve, and plans linkages and opportunities for students and curriculum.
  • Actively involved in national public health associations, such as the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), by serving on committees, attending conferences, etc.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.

Description
New and continuing program development
  • Partners with the ADHSE in leading the development of new curricula and program offerings, supporting new master’s degree or certificate programs (or the expansion of or delivery formats of existing program offerings), under the guidance of the ADHSE and in partnership with school leadership, department chairs, affiliated faculty and other institutional leaders across Dartmouth.
  • Participates in the evaluation, implementation and support of new curricular delivery modalities as dictated by market trends and opportunities, working closely with the ADHSE, the Dean of Educational Affairs, and Geisel’s academic leadership (i.e. Dept Chairs).
  • Collaborates with leadership of other Geisel and Dartmouth College program curricula to provide opportunities for interprofessional education.

Description
Budget and finance management
  • Responsible for providing oversight for all MPH program financial and operating performance including meeting and implementing established budgetary and enrollment expectations for the respective curricula.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Educational Affairs and Geisel Finance team on budgetary planning and expenditure decisions.
