Laboratory Technologist - Pathology Microbiology - Eves/ Rotating

Location: METROHEALTH MEDICAL CENTER

Biweekly Hours: 80.00

Shift: 2nd shift (3p-11:30p) w/ rotation to 1st shift (7a-3:30p) as needed. Rot wknds and holidays

Summary: 

Performs a variety of Clinical and Anatomic Pathology laboratory tests of various complexities under minimal technical supervision while following procedural guidelines and professional standards. Analyzes body fluids such as blood, urine and tissue samples, and records normal or abnormal findings.  Ensures all testing performed adheres to departmental guidelines, safety and regulatory requirements, and quality control standards.  Identifies and recommends operating procedure improvements.  Assists with the training of laboratory staff and residents.  Cooperates with a diverse group of people and varying skill levels in performing daily operational tasks.  Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System. 

 

 

Responsibilities:

1. Performs a variety of clinical and/or anatomic pathology laboratory tests and procedures of various complexities, following procedural guidelines and professional standards by:

a. Ensuring patient identity, sample integrity, and appropriate sample processing, including centrifuging, labeling, aliquoting and delivering specimens to proper locations within the department of Pathology.

b. Verifying test results; initiating appropriate corrective action and developing the resolution of test result discrepancies.

c. Reporting panic, alert, delta and other values that require physician notification according to department protocol; communicating test results, reference ranges and other relevant information to authorized sources in a professional manner.

d. Operating testing instruments, trouble-shooting, and resolving instrument problems as required; initiating a call to technical support and service if needed.

e. Performing and documenting the required preventative maintenance of equipment and instrumentation; minimizing testing delays; documenting related problems and communicating them to supervisor.

f. Operating peripheral computer equipment, Health Information System/Laboratory Information System (HIS/LIS), and instrument-specific computer equipment.

g. Assisting in the training of laboratory staff and residents as needed.

h. Ensuring all performed testing adheres to departmental guidelines, safety and regulatory requirements and quality control standards; identifying and recommending operating procedure improvements.

i. Following established guidelines for sample and requisition storage while allowing for rapid retrieval.

j. Using complex computer systems to evaluate data and to document result findings.

k. Documenting information by maintaining manual or electronic logs.


2. Provides backup support to other ancillary areas of Pathology such as, but not limited to, central processing, phlebotomy, surgical grossing and others.


3. Participates in the development, maintenance and enhancement of quality control and quality assurance programs; identifies and recommends improvements as needed.


4. Monitors the inventory levels of laboratory supplies, initials inventory control records, and reports the status to the supervisor; maintains a well-organized, stocked and clean work area.


5. Keeps abreast of laboratory/pathology trends, developments and practices by participating in continuing education courses and reading current literature; participates in hospital required education programs such as fires safety, chemical right to know, etc.; develops and presents continuing education programs as required.


6. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

Required:
 Associate Degree in Science from an accredited institution or completion of a comparable military educational program for medical laboratory technology. Registered or registry-eligible Medical Technologist (MT) with one or more of the following: MT/ASCP, MLS/ASCP, MLT/ASCP, MT/AMT or other appropriate American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) specialty. - Registry-eligible consists of: - Completion of a National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) approved program or 10 years of relevant Laboratory experience. Successful completion and notification to The MetroHealth System of a passing score on a certification exam (categories listed above) within 6 months of hire is required for continued employment. - If registry cycle is greater than 6 months, notification of successful completion must occur one month after the next available registry date for continued employment. Experience with laboratory equipment and computer systems. Must have good interpersonal and communication skills. Reliable mode of transportation and the ability to rotate to other locations within The MetroHealth System as needed.

Preferred:
Bachelor of Science with 5 years of medical laboratory experience. Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification.Physical Requirements: May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day. May need to sit or stand for extended periods. See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.
