Starting salary up to $40.74/hour ($85,029/year), a cash allowance of $600/month, and a competitive total compensation package!*


The Natural Resources Park Program Supervisor position is a great opportunity for a passionate professional with natural resources experience to join a growing Natural Resources division and help facilitate ecosystem resilience for over 12,000 acres of park land. Currently, the Regional Parks Department is recruiting to fill two regular Natural Resources Park Program Supervisor positions (one dedicated to overseeing a grazing program and the other dedicated to a forest management program) and one temporary Extra-Help position dedicated to grant writing and managing grant-funded projects.
The Civil Service title for this position is Park Program Supervisor. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help vacancies as they occur during the active status of the list. County employees who wish to be considered for future positions are strongly encouraged to apply to this recruitment.

These positions supervise and direct the work of staff engaged in monitoring, stewardship, and restoration activities. Additionally, Natural Resources Park Program Supervisors:
  • Facilitate the expansion programs for fuels reduction/prescribed fire, prescribed grazing, and vegetation and wildlife management
  • Manage complex restoration projects
  • Establish and maintains effective working relationships with other governmental agencies, community groups, schools, staff, and private businesses
  • Respond to the public's questions and inquiries regarding natural resource management issues and assists in delivering natural resource and outdoor recreation programs
  • Assist in supporting web site content and materials for department promotional and communication activities 
  • Oversee staff engaged in natural resource stewardship
  • Assist the Natural Resources Manager in the pursuit of grants and other special funding avenues for park programs
The ideal candidates will possess a combination of the following:
  • Significant work experience in the field of vegetation management, such as rangeland management, prescribed herbivory, public lands grazing and/or forestry management, and fuels reduction 
  • Certification as a Rangeland Manager or Register Professional Forester or the interest, experience, and coursework to become certified within three years 
  • Substantial experience in project management including management of grant-funded projects 
  • Extensive grant writing experience and success at securing grant funding 
  • Training as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2)  and experience and training with prescribed fire techniques, including of burn plan development and site preparation strategies
  • Experience supervising staff engaged in natural resource stewardship 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT
Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and work experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed herein.  Normally, this would include a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, with coursework in environmental and social sciences, natural resource management, cultural history, education, marketing, public administration, communications, community organizing, recreation services, or a closely related field, AND two years of professional level experience performing public relations, marketing, or program management, or education activities in support of a program in the area of recreation, aquatics, natural resources, environmental and cultural education and/or outreach program that included at least one year supervising or leading staff. An advanced degree in a related field is highly desirable.

Required Certifications: First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) card, AND American Red Cross or American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required during the six-month probationary period.  For certain assignments (e.g., aquatics), the American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate is required within one year of employment.  Once obtained, these certifications must be maintained throughout employment in this classification.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: the principles and practices of the strategies and methods of effective program development, coordination, and evaluation; technical program requirements in one or more park program areas (e.g., recreation, aquatics, interpretation, natural resources, environmental and cultural education, and/or outreach); effective teaching and training strategies; principles, techniques, and methods of public relations; supervision and leadership principles and techniques; office procedures and equipment including computers and applicable software applications; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; techniques for communicating effectively with culturally diverse partners and program participants; techniques of preparing business correspondence and reports; and fundamentals of instruction and curriculum development.

Ability to: develop, implement, and coordinate programs in park program areas (e.g., recreation, aquatics, natural resources, environmental and cultural education, and/or outreach); represent Regional Parks on various committees and councils, with community organizations, and in meetings; gather and analyze statistical information; communicate orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and effective manner for audiences with varied socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds; establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff, external partners, and stakeholders; and effectively use computer systems, applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:
