Summary: 

Provides assistance with ambulatory procedures and/or outpatient surgeries. Performs various patient care duties, clerical activities, and cleaning duties in the delivery of high quality care to children through adults in the ambulatory setting. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

 

 

Responsibilities:

1. Properly sets up exam/procedure/operating room according to the specific procedure

2. Follows the physician preference cards for the procedure or surgery and updates preference cards as warranted.

3. Greets and escorts patients to the exam/procedure room.

4. Obtains initial information, vital signs and databases information into electronic medical record

5. Prepares patients for the procedure and or surgery utilizing aseptic technique standards


6. Maintains the integrity of the sterile field when utilized for any procedure.

7. Assists with ambulatory procedures, which are contingent upon department assignment and may include but are not limited to minor surgeries, C-sections, tubal ligations, electro cautery, biopsies, sigmoidoscopies, gynecological exams, cystoscopies, endoscopies, wound care, specialized skin care, sterile technique procedures, specimen preparation, spirometer tests, etc.

8. Maintains and monitors par levels for surgical supplies, and orders supplies as needed.

9. Adheres to sterile technique standards and universal precautions related to safe handling of hazardous infectious waste and body substance precautions.

10. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment according to accepted system protocols

11. Demonstrates the ability to perform responsibly in emergency situations based on the needs of patients and under the direction of a RN or Physician. Obtains vital signs, blood glucose levels and documents pain and nutritional screen per protocols. Checks patient’s medical record for pertinent data, reviews and maintains current patient information/demographic data.

12. Chaperons and/or assists patient and physician during procedures and examination as requested by the physician

13. Assist with obtaining patient forms and initiating completion prior to provider review and signature as directed per established process of assigned area.

14. Collaborates with phone nurse for preparing referral requests from patient.

15. Setting up for and collecting labels and transports specimens; may perform CLIA approved tests according to defined competencies.

16. Cleans and restocks exam rooms/procedure rooms after patient treatment.

17. Participates in patient discharge by reinforcing patient education and providing teaching material as indicated by provider or nurse. Schedules follow-up appointments as needed.

18. Maintains unit safety & equipment checklist/logs.

19. Supports the safety and efficiency of department operations

Required:
High School Graduate or passage of a high school equivalency exam.
Meets one of the following:
• Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program and two years full-time (or equivalent part-time) recent* patient care experience (not including externship) working in an ambulatory, inpatient, surgical, or surgical practice office setting.
• Recent* graduate of a Surgical Technologist program.
• Experience as Surgical Technologist in an operating room or ambulatory surgery setting.
Working knowledge of basic surgical equipment.
Working knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to operate related office and medical equipment.
Current American Heart Association BLS for the Healthcare Provider certification or obtains within 90 days of hire.
Successfully completes department specific competencies within designated time period.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrates good judgment, flexibility, initiative, and have ability to problem solve.
Reliable transportation to travel to MHS sites.

*Recent is defined as within the last 18 months.

Preferred:
Certified Medical Assistant or Surgical Technologist.

Physical Requirements:
May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day.
May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Ability to lift 250-300 pounds with assistance.
Ability to push/pull up to 500 pounds with assistance.
Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.
Requires some exposure to chemicals and cleaning products.
