Job Description

Our MedSurg unit has 1 Full Time Nights opening for a Nurse Tech, to add to their team. This team provides compassionate inpatient care, to patients up to age 18, that will have at least a 24 hour stay within our general medical/surgical unit, at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

With the exception of the initial week of training, most shifts are 7:00-7:30, and our greatest need currently is for a candidate that has flexibility to work multiple weeknights and rotate weekend shifts

Our Nurse Techs are similar to a CNA, but without the certification. They work under the supervision of an RN, providing care for up to 10 patients during their shift. Having previous patient care and strong customer service experience, is preferred.

The Nursing Technician role is a very fast paced role requiring strong communication and teamwork skills, regardless of the department you are working in.

Essential Functions

• This is a very hands-on role, and duties will include bed bathing, toileting, changing bedding while patients are in the bed, taking vitals, changing dressings, ambulating patients, inserting and removing catheters, and occasionally being asked to cover a 1:1 shift, which requires being a safety attendant in the patient's room for the entire shift.
• Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
• Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN or Provider, consistent with clinical policies and procedures, and department standard work. Provides input in the development of an individualized plan of care. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
• Articulates and introduces themselves as a nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.
• Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.
• Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.

Qualifications

• Required High School Diploma or equivalent
• CERT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required within 90 days of start date and training can be provided by Spectrum Health for those that don't already have this cert.
