Description of Work

NOTE:  Employees in these positions will work not more than twenty-four (24) hours per week.


A Paratransit Operator, under the general supervision of the Transit Supervisor, operates demand/response paratransit vehicles in a safe and reliable manner for the County of Muskegon. A Paratransit Operator provides professional, knowledgeable, and courteous transportation services by answering customer questions, scheduling and providing customer trips, reporting problems to supervisory personnel, instructing new employees in the proper operation of vehicles and departmental procedures, and driving paratransit vehicles. An employee in this class may be assigned to any shift or weekend work, and performs other related work duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  1. Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of completion of the General Education Development (GED) test.
  2. Have a minimum of three (3) years driving experience.
  3. Possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
  4. Have an excellent driving record which satisfies the following characteristics:
    a. Demonstrates a pattern of safe and lawful motor vehicle operation.
    b. Less than five (5) points on driving record.
    c. No record of impaired driving or driving under the influence offenses.
    d. No more than one accident which resulted in a violation in the past five (5) years.
           
Additional Requirements:

As a condition of continued employment, employees in this class are required to possess and maintain a Class C Michigan Commercial Driver License with P endorsement. Employees will comply with federally-mandated drug and alcohol testing programs and have the ability to maintain a DOT Medical Card by submitting to and satisfactorily passing periodic DOT physicals. Employees must submit to andd successfully pass periodic criminal background checks.

Possession of a Class B Michigan Commercial Drivers License with BP endorsements is encouraged.

Physical Conditions / Work Location

Employees in this class must be in good physical condition such as to allow for light physical work activity involving bending, stooping, and prolonged sitting with considerable pushing and pulling of arm and leg controls. Drivers must be physically able to move and assist wheelchair patrons on and off vehicles, and properly secure wheelchair users. In case of an accident or emergency, a driver may be required to remove passengers from the vehicle, particularly if the passenger is disabled.

Employees in this class operate County Transit vehicles in a variety of weather conditions.

EVALUATION CONTENT

The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment.  An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test.  Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check.  Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system.  For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications.  This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
