Background

UW Medicine includes Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Medical Center, UW Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Neighborhood Clinics, UW Physicians, UW School of Medicine and Airlift Northwest. Of the $563 million in gifts and private grants raised in FY17 by the University of Washington, UW Medicine raised $204 million (36 percent of the University's total) in gifts and private grants from nearly 16,000 donors. The University of Washington is in the final three years of a multi-billion dollar campaign. UW Medicine's fundraising goal for the campaign is $2 billion.

Position Purpose

The Senior Director for Philanthropy will work with the Associate Vice President, Campaign, for UW Medicine Advancement and other advancement staff, academic and administrative leaders, and volunteers to provide leadership and strategic direction for the major gifts program in support of UW Medicine. The Senior Director will be the primary staff member in UW Medicine Advancement responsible for generating philanthropic support for the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (ISCRM), the neurosciences, including both Neurosurgery and Neurology, as well as autism. In this capacity, the Senior Director will have leadership responsibility for developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy to increase gift and grant support for UW Medicine. In this role, the Senior Director will work with department chairs , administrators and other academic leaders to develop fundraising strategies that support the above mentioned areas. As part of UW Medicine's comprehensive fundraising campaign, Accelerate, the Senior Director will develop annual fundraising plans and manage a comprehensive campaign strategy for ISCRM, which has a campaign fundraising goal of $100 million. The Senior Director will also be responsible for managing a growing team of major gift officers focused on securing major gifts for priority campaign initiatives, including sports health and safety, traumatic brain injury, and autism. The Senior Director will be expected to work closely with senior UW Medicine administrative leadership, department chairs, academic leaders, faculty, and volunteers.

 

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning, Leadership, and Management-50%

Strategic Planning

Create and implement the long-term strategic plan for ISCRM, autism and the neurosciences, including developing an annual plan, including goals, objectives, and strategies.Provide regular progress reports to the Associate Vice President, Campaign.

 

Leadership

Provide leadership to faculty, administrators, and department chairs in designing and implementing strategies to sustain and increase organizational support. Coordinate the participation of academic leaders, faculty members, administrators, volunteers, and advancement staff in engagement, solicitation, and stewardship activities.

Work with the Associate Vice President and others to assist in the development of broad themes for UW Medicine. Help to identify interdisciplinary efforts that would attract major funding.

 

Management

The Senior Director will supervise a growing team of advancement professionals. The Senior Director will manage the work of volunteers and direct the collaborative efforts of faculty and staff colleagues to develop special events, marketing materials, and donor relations activities to support major and principal gift fundraising.

Train faculty and volunteers on best practices in grateful patient fundraising, ensuring that all state and federal (HIPAA) privacy regulations are followed.

Assume management of special projects assigned by the Associate Vice President.

 

Direct Fundraising-50%

Develop a strategic major gifts plan for campaign priorities and assigned departments, divisions, and focus areas within UW Medicine. Work with department chairs, academic leaders, and faculty to develop funding priorities and implement advancement programs needed to sustain major and principal gift levels of philanthropic support. Develop a pool of primarily individual, with some joint responsibility for corporate and foundation, major and principal gift prospective donors for each assigned area. Coordinate the participation of department chairs, academic leaders, and faculty in major gift fundraising activities.

Manage a portfolio of 100 to 125 major and principal gift prospective donors with capacity to make gifts of $500,000 or more, including individuals with potential of $1 million or more. Work with faculty and volunteers to identify and qualify new major gift prospective donors, with emphasis on securing faculty referrals of grateful patients. Develop and implement a cultivation and solicitation strategy for each assigned major gift prospective donor. Record and track all activity using the University's prospect management and tracking system. Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations, and other materials needed to secure major gifts. For each major gift donor managed, develop appropriate stewardship activities within the context of the overall stewardship plan.

 

In alignment with University of Washington and UW Medicine Advancement accountability metrics, strive toward the following goals:

Make approximately 100 substantive donor contacts with donors and prospective donors that advance the relationship toward philanthropic commitment.

Develop and present 12-20 major gift proposals each year with a target of securing an average of $2.5 million+ in new commitments.

As appropriate, identify, recruit, train, and develop leadership roles for volunteers who assist with major gift fundraising activities. Staff volunteer fundraising partnerships and committees as assigned.

As needed, coordinate major gift fundraising activities with UW Medicine colleagues, and UW colleagues in Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Principal Giving, Regional Giving, etc. We place a premium on intra-team collegiality, and assignment and donor portfolios frequently overlap. The Senior Director for Philanthropy will demonstrate exceptional communication and collaboration skills.

Lead Responsibilities

The Director for Philanthropy is responsible for all campaign planning and implementation activities and major gift fundraising for assigned departments, divisions, and program areas. To achieve goals, the Senior Director for Philanthropy serves as the lead strategist and coordinates the activities of the team and department chairs, academic leaders, faculty, volunteers, and colleagues within UW and UW Medicine.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Senior Director will supervise a growing team of advancement professionals. The Senior Director will manage the work of volunteers and direct the collaborative efforts of faculty and staff colleagues. The Senior Director for Philanthropy participates in hiring, performance appraisals, promotions/reclassifications, salary adjustments, disciplinary actions, and/or handling complaints/grievances.

 

Position Complexities

  • Developing and implementing major gift fundraising strategies for several key campaign priorities, departments and program areas that focus on diverse and complex areas of medicine. These areas currently include ISCRM, autism and the neurosciences.
  • Encouraging department chairs and faculty to actively and productively participate in the fundraising process; faculty are very busy with responsibilities in research, teaching, and clinical care.
  • Identifying donors with the potential and affinity to make major gifts in each program area; there are limited "ready-made" prospective donor pools for assigned areas.
  • Maintaining a heavy strategic contact schedule (~8-10 contacts per month) while developing and managing advancement activities. Face-to-face visits with prospective major donors are preferred, unless the donor indicates otherwise.
  • Developing and preparing 12-20 major gift proposals per year, with a minimum request of at least $25k, with a focus on proposals of $1 million+. Target to secure an average of $2.5 million in gifts each year.
  • Working collaboratively with diverse constituencies (faculty, staff, patients, community leaders, volunteers) with diverse goals and expectations.
  • Developing a keen understanding of the assigned areas of medicine and interpreting this complex scientific and medical information for a lay audience.
  • Coordinating activities within the complex environment of UW and UW Medicine.
  • Ensuring that all fundraising activities with patients are compliant with state and federal (HIPAA) privacy regulations.

Impact to the University

While UW Medicine Advancement is the leading fundraising unit on campus, the level of private gifts must increase if UW Medicine is to remain competitive with its true peers, predominantly private institutions. UW Medicine is responsible for one-third to one-half of the gift revenue that the University of Washington receives annually. The Senior Director for Philanthropy will work with key academic and administrative leaders and business, community, and civic leaders to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors with the capacity of making gifts of $500K+, and manage a team of fundraisers who are focusing on securing gifts of $50K+.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.

 

Minimum Work Experience

  • Six to seven or more years of experience in institutional advancement - preferably in a college or university setting. Superior writing and editing ability and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to solicit and close seven-figure philanthropic gifts; the ability to manage and lead a team of frontline fundraisers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies (faculty, staff, alumni, donors, patients, community leaders, volunteers) with diverse goals and expectations.
  • Familiarity with patient privacy regulations to ensure that all fundraising activities are compliant with the federal privacy regulations (HIPAA).
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and differences through dialog and open communication in a timely manner. Sees every difference as an opportunity for growth and change.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service. Poised, professional manner with the ability to express oneself clearly and empathetically in interactions with others in all forms of communications, i.e. verbal and written, one-on-one, group, etc.
