The Lansing State Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a content coach to join its editing team. We work in a digital-first environment and produce multiple daily newspapers from our hub in Lansing. Candidates must be able to coach both entry-level reporters and those with experience. Good knowledge of AP Style and fundamental newsgathering standards are a must. We interact daily with colleagues in multiple Michigan newsrooms as well as a digital production team and national design studios.

 

Here’s what you need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent.
  • Five years or more of daily journalism experience.
  • Editing experience is preferred, but successful reporters eager for a leadership role will be considered.
  • Ability to help reporters identify story topics that will resonate with our audiences and execute them by delivering clear, complete news articles and video as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media to augment news coverage and engage audience on digital platforms.
  • An understanding of metrics.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently.
  • Skill at collaborating in a cross-functional environment and adapting in a rapidly changing industry.
  • This job includes some evening and weekend work. It is a management position with a salary commensurate with experience.

 

The Lansing State Journal serves Michigan’s dynamic state capital market. Large employers include Michigan State University, two General Motors assembly plants, and large health care and insurance sectors. Entertainment includes Big Ten sports, MSU’s Wharton Center and abundant city, county and state parks including two at Lake Lansing. The area is also within easy distance of Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan’s beautiful beaches.
