Summary


SUMMARY:
Public Health Seattle-King County is looking for a self-motivated, flexible, and compassionate Public Health Nurse (PHN) to increase nursing capacity on the Mobile Medical Program’s Street Medicine Team as well as provide support to the Mobile Medical Vans. In this role, the PHN will work with a multidisciplinary street team that addresses the medical, behavioral health care and harm reduction needs of people living homeless. The Street Medicine Team is currently comprised of a nurse practitioner, public health nurse and behavioral health focused outreach worker. A second PHN will allow the team increase capacity for conducting nursing assessments, street based wound care, COVID testing, STD testing, and provision of test results. The role will work with the Street Team three days a week and support the Mobile Medical Vans 1 to 2 days per week to support primarily COVID testing. This schedule is subject to change.

Job Duties:
The Street Medicine Team seeks out and brings care directly to people living outside and in encampments. The team aims to engage people in health education, professional and peer support, and treatment for their medical and behavioral health conditions via a trauma-informed and harm reduction approach. The Street Medicine team has been in operation for approximately a year and this new PHN will have a unique opportunity to inform and shape program development. Job duties include:

  • Provide training, orientation and education to staff, clients, students and the community.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities to meet laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Provide birth control and pregnancy options counseling (including referrals for pregnancy termination services).
  • Assist with tracking client engagement and connections to community health agencies.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and attends staff/team meetings as deemed necessary.
  • Provide support to the Mobile Medical Vans up two days per week in order to support COVID and STD testing, provision of results and nurse triage.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
  • Experience providing health education and nursing care to individuals who are living homeless with substance use and mental health conditions
  • Ability to apply concepts of harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and equity & social justice principles to nursing practice
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, independently manage time and handle multiple tasks
  • Personal flexibility, a sense of humor and the ability to accept feedback while working with a highly collaborative team
  • Skilled in Motivational Interviewing (MI) or willing to become trained in MI
  • Experience in verbal de-escalation and physical interventions in emergent situations to maintain a safe and secure environment
  • Bilingual language skills desired.
  • Bicultural desired

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing
  • Washington State Driver’s License or ability to travel to various sites throughout Seattle-King County.
  • Current CPR-BLS for healthcare providers
  • Willing to provide options counseling

WHO MAY APPLY: This position is open to all qualified applicants and this includes new to practice and re-entry nurses.


WORK SCHEDULE: This is a 1.0 FTE, Term-Limited Temprorary or Special Duty Assignment that has a projected term of 1 year. This position is benefited and is overtime eligible. Typical hours and days of work is primarily Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with evening shifts up to two days per week (i.e. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.). Occasional weekend hours to cover incoming patient test results (i.e. a few hours per month).

WORK LOCATION: Variable based on community needs. Street Medicine and Mobile Medical shifts are located throughout King County.
