Summary


This position is responsible for assigning and coordinating the work of Carpenters, Maintenance Constructors and support staff on the Shelter Refurbishment crew.  This work involves providing technical assistance and lead direction to a group responsible for various facility maintenance, shelter refurbishing and other related projects.  This position works directly with a Facilities Chief and manages most field aspects of the Shelter Refurbish Program, along with most of the records/documentation associated with the project(s). This is a working lead position and all normal duties of a Carpenter or Maintenance Constructor will also be performed. 

Vacancy Information
This recruitment will be used to fill one immediate career service position as a Transit Shelter Refurb Lead, in King County Metro's Facilities Division.  It may also be used to create an eligibility list for any future career service positions that may need to be filled in the next year.  
 
Who May Apply
In accordance with the ATU Local 587 bargaining agreement, this position is open ONLY internally to all Metro King County Facilities Division employees who have completed two years of current full-time service at Metro within the classification to be led, Transit Carpenter or Maintenance Constructor.  This vacancy will be recruited from the journey-level trades of these work groups.

Work Schedule
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is overtime eligible. Shift and weekend work may be required.  Employee is subject to 24-hour call-out in response to emergencies.

JOB DUTIES:
Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work. In addition to performing the full range of responsibilities of the Transit Carpenter or Maintenance Constructor, you will exhibit these principles while perform the following duties:
 
  • Responsible for directing shelter crew with assembling, setting and removing shelters and related items throughout King County
  • Under the direct supervision of a facilities Chief this person will lead a trades crew in the removal and replacement of shelters and other related items
  • Maintain records of the removal and replacement of shelters and shelter styles
  • Assist the Chief in determining which shelters are selected for the refurbish program each year
  • Plan, organize and schedule field duties for a crew of skilled and semi-skilled workers with the setting, removing, and assembling of shelters and other related items
  • Participate in the monitoring of work quality and quantity, document behavior or performance concerns and/or commendations for Chief review
  • Read and interpret drawings, plans, blueprints, and layouts
  • Understand shelter specifications and styles to assure proper shelter installation
  • Scheduling of equipment, labor, and materials is required
  • Maintain routine records and prepare various reports
  • Ability to use computer and monitor systems online
  • Other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
Two years of current Metro work experience as a Transit Carpenter or Maintenance Constructor is required.

In addition:
 
  • Ability to plan, assign, balance and check work

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License and an acceptable driving record
  • First Aid Card within 6 months
  • Ability to obtain a Rigger/Signal Person Card within 6 months
  • Ability to obtain a valid Flagging Card within 6 months
  • Ability to obtain a Traffic Control Supervisor Card within 6 months
If you are a current Maintenance Constructor, you must have a valid Combination Driver's License with Class A endorsement. In addition, the ability to obtain Crane Certification within 6 months.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  This position is required to frequently lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift objects up to 100 pounds with assistance. This job also requires frequent walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling and stooping; and safe operation of power tools.
 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Working Environment
Work is performed in hot and/or confined areas, inclement weather or high places. When warranted, safety equipment and protective clothing shall be used/worn.

If you are promoted to this position as a Transit Shelter Refurb Lead from the Maintenance Constructor classification, the position is considered safety sensitive.  Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.
