About the Positions

Working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, Heavy Equipment Technicians (HETs) maintain, diagnose, repair, and overhaul the County's on/off-road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, emergency and man-lift vehicles, park, road, and construction maintenance equipment, generators, and other miscellaneous equipment. The positions also repair, rebuild, and maintain engines, transmissions, hydraulic and fuel injection systems, and other major heavy equipment components, as well as install and repair electrical systems. Additionally, HETs are deployed to emergency road calls in the field where they perform onsite mechanical assessment diagnostics and may need to make extensive repairs. Other responsibilities include:

  • Performing California Highway Patrol Basic Inspection of Terminals testing
  • Identifying and sourcing appropriate parts needed for repair and recording in the part inventory use system
  • Inspecting and servicing emissions control devices and performing related testing and certification
  • Performing acetylene, arc, and electric welding to fit, fabricate, or repair parts 
  • Communicating with customers and vendors on the status of equipment installation and repair
  • Completing routine computer data entry on daily work performed and inventory, and using computer to retrieve records regarding previous repairs    
  • May be assigned to train and serve as a technical resource for the work of Heavy Equipment Mechanics and interns
The ideal candidates will be self-motivated, have good customer service and communication skills, and possess:

  • A "fix it once, and fix it right" mindset
  • Extensive experience diagnosing and repairing medium and heavy-duty trucks and off-road equipment including loaders, backhoes, and trailers
  • Some experience working in a fleet environment 
  • Coursework/training certificates in medium/heavy duty trucks or equipment diagnostics, maintenance, and/or repair
  • Experience using computer-based fleet recordkeeping systems 
  • An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Medium-Heavy Truck Certification 
  • A sense of ownership and accountability, and a willingness and commitment to add value to the organization
EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT

Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.

We are currently recruiting to fill a Full-Time and an Extra-Help Heavy Equipment Technician position. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education, experience and training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, this would include two years of experience in the repair of a wide variety of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy trucks.

Licenses: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential functions of the position. 

All employees in this class must obtain a State of California Class A commercial driver's license by June 30, 2019. Upon appointment to a position in this classification, employees must obtain a State of California Class A commercial driver's license by the completion of the probationary period.

Certifications: California Council on Diesel Education and Technology (CCDET) I and II Course certificates are required by the completion of the probationary period. Possession of the ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck Certification is highly desirable.

Special Requirement: Possession of the small and large hand tools necessary to perform all assigned work. License for Emission Control Testing and Certification is required for some assignments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: the methods, tools, testing instruments, parts, and equipment used in the major repair, replacement, installation, and overhaul of on/off road equipment, and medium/heavy duty trucks; safety diagnosis, and preventative maintenance inspection methods and techniques; techniques and methods of repairing, replacing, installing, and overhauling on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, and related component parts, including diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel engines, carburetors, hydraulic and electrical systems, fuel injection systems, transmissions, and differentials; the theory, care, and operation of diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternate fuel powered engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of on/off road equipment and medium/heavy duty trucks.

Ability to: diagnose and locate mechanical and safety problems, and determine appropriate corrective action; repair, replace, remove, install, and overhaul of medium/heavy duty trucks and on/off road equipment, including emergency vehicles, man lift vehicles, park maintenance equipment, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (both stationary and mobile), and related component parts without direct supervision; research and identify appropriate replacement parts; effectively use hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and machines in the repair, replacement, removal, installation, and overhaul of  on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, and related component parts; perform emission control testing and certification; read and write English; interpret manufacturers' specifications; follow oral and written instructions; use computer system to access and maintain accurate records, including updates to inventory records, parts orders, and time records,; perform basic arithmetic calculations; work effectively with customers and vendors; work under varying field and weather conditions and, occasionally, on weekends.
