Summary:

Supports others in the provision of high quality clinical care by assisting with compiling, processing, providing and maintaining the medical records of The MetroHealth System (MHS) in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include medical record functions with hard copy, electronic and microfilmed medical records for all patient visit types. Provides office coverage for the Health Information Management Department according to schedule. Supports the integrity of the medical record by ensuring the record is complete, accurate, and that health information is available timely to facilitate clinical and healthcare operations. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

 

 

Responsibilities:

1. Performs a variety of clerical functions supporting the delivery of health information services.

2. Processes hard copy medical record documents from all patient visit types into computerized document imaging system and ultimately electronic medical record system.

3.Assists with maintaining the integrity of MHS’s computerized master patient index.

4. Enters medical release of information requests and correspondence into the electronic release of information management application.

5. Consistently maintains quality and productivity standards established for role to include turn-around-times and deadlines as appropriate.

6. Proficiently maintains assigned electronic work queues in the EMR and document capture systems to support the integrity of the medical record

7. Professional development: Participates in MHS and departmental sponsored education opportunities relevant to role. Meets hospital specific educational requirements. Becomes proficient in the use of new office technology as it is deployed.

8. May assist with the orientation process with fellow colleagues and students.

9. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.



 

 

Qualifications:

Required:
High school graduate or passage of a high school equivalency exam.
Two (2) years’ experience in health information management, comparable physician office, clinic or hospital business office, or healthcare customer service/office setting.
In lieu of 2 years of experience, may consider an Associate’s degree in health information technology or a related.
Medical terminology training or experience.
Proficiency with computers and commonly used software applications, including Microsoft Office, internet, electronic health record.
Competent use of office equipment such as multifunctional devices, document scanners, computer workstations.
Typing 25 wpm.
Strong customer relations and communication skills.
Demonstrated initiative and independent problem-solving skills.
Attention to detail, ability to follow directions, prioritize responsibilities, and work with minimal supervision in a team oriented atmosphere.

Preferred:
Associates Degree in health information technology or related field.
Experience with document imaging systems.
Experience with electronic medical record systems.
Familiarity with HIPAA privacy and Joint Commission Record of Care standards.

Physical Requirements:
May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day.
May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
May perform hospital rounds involving walking and pushing carts containing hard copy medical records
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Finger dexterity to operate office equipment required.
May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion.
Ability to communicate in face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications.
Ability to see computer monitor and departmental documents.
