Job Summary:

The State University of New York Upstate Medical University, located in Syracuse, New York invites applications for the position of Paralegal.  As a member of the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), and reporting to the Chief Campus Counsel, the Paralegal will be responsible for providing support to the attorneys within OGC and University Hospital Counsel. The Paralegal is responsible for assisting attorneys with reviewing and editing a wide variety of health care contracts, commercial contracts, and affiliation agreements. Other responsibilities include conducting general legal research, assisting in review and approval of various legal matters, and providing other general legal service assistance as needed, including, but not limited to, assisting labor counsel with scheduling of arbitrations and maintaining records related to this responsibility.  

 About the Office of General Counsel 

The Office of General Counsel provides legal services and support to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor and senior officers in System Administration at Albany, New York, and the presidents and administrators of the campuses within the System. Under the leadership of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and the General Counsel, the SUNY Office of General Counsel is responsible for providing legal services to the System SUNY campuses.  The OGC consists of 45 experienced higher education attorneys, paralegals and support staff located in Albany at the System Administration headquarters and in campus-based offices at the four University Centers, Health Science Centers, and various SUNY colleges. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review, revise, and provide guidance to contract administrators under the supervision of University Hospital Counsel for medical service agreements to assure compliance;
  • Coordinate, track, monitor, and obtain necessary documentation to support arrangements and timely legal review;
  • Assist with organization of contract processing and development;
  • Prepare and maintain files of legal documents and contract status reports;
  • Maintain awareness of legal and procedural requirements and trends to assist in effectively negotiate and administer contracts;
  • Regularly participate meetings in support of University Hospital Counsel with Contract and Hospital Administration;
  • Communicate with University Hospital Employee Labor Relations Department, union representatives and arbitration administration groups on behalf of University Labor Counsel to coordinate scheduling of arbitrations;
  • Manage, maintain, and update arbitration files, case lists, and calendar in support of Labor Counsel; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • a 4-year bachelor’s degree; OR
  • a Paralegal degree/Certificate or a 2-year associate degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience as a paralegal in a law firm, government, in-house legal department or another similar legal environment
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Familiarity with Internet applications and ability to learn other office technology and databases;
    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills solution oriented;
  • Extremely organized with a strong sense of priority, urgency and commitment to deadlines;
    Ability to manage a heavy workload and prioritize multiple projects; and
  • Ability to work independently while functioning well in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Notary public licensure a plus; 
  • Ability to work effectively with internal staff and outside counsel, and experience in working with diverse clients; 
  • Ability to understand general business operations, issues and dynamics beyond the scope of basic legal issues; 
  • Ability to work as part of a team and willing to back up others; 
  • Proficiency with Westlaw (Legal Research Tools) Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint & Excel) Pacer, New York e-Courts, Google Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro; 
  • Excellent judgment and communication skills;  
  • Experience establishing and maintaining complex filing systems and ability to organize and analyze large volumes of information and documents; 
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information;  
  • Driven and self-motivated with a strong desire for learning; 
  • Exceptional writing, organizational and project management skills; and 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of other departments to support their functions as well as to assist them in supporting the legal staff. 
Work Days:

Monday-Friday 9 am-5pm
