Position Summary: To be responsible for the creation/development/planning, management, administration and evaluation of the College’s comprehensive Career Services and Development programs, including the Student Employment Program (SEP), and services-in alignment with the College’s mission and values to foster the academic, societal, economic and cultural enrichment of our constituents. The Director has responsibility for leading the planning, implementation and evaluation of activities within the Student Employment Project (SEP), to assist in the development of a consistent pipeline of student employees to fill temporary part-time positions in relation to the strategic plan, providing career development, networking, training opportunities in collaboration with Human Resources, New Student Orientation, SEAL, etc. The Director is also responsible for serving AS, AAS, and technical certificate earners in their career development and job search; and works with community employers by educating them about the College’s programs and providing employers with a trained workforce. Additionally, the Director is responsible for reporting placement rates for the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) annual performance funding report and other Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) required reporting.

Essential Functions:

60%

Plan, develop, manage and supervise comprehensive Career Development programs for students, graduates, faculty/staff and other internal and external constituents, including the Student Employment Program (SEP). Collaborate with academic departments, Human Resources, Foundation and Alumni Office, student affairs departments (Stay Strong Student Success Center, Counseling Services, Advising, Student Engagement and Leadership, etc.) and other entities to strengthen and create career development/readiness opportunities for students.

1.     Design, execute and evaluate a myriad of events, workshops, exhibits to increase awareness, knowledge/skills of career awareness, career development/readiness

a.     Spearhead and support the Student Employment Program (SEP), including career development and training opportunities in collaboration with the Human Resources department.

b.     Evaluate prior Placement Office activities to ascertain the effectiveness of efforts in order to include/revise/discontinue in the new Career Development department’s goals and objectives

c.     Oversee redesign/development of internal database for increased efficiency, effectiveness and support for new Career Services offerings and services (evaluation/metrics, etc.)

d.     Provide leadership for the implementation of You Science, collaborating with Career Community Coordinators, Student Success Teams, and Student Services ensuring all students

2.     Provide direct services to individual students and graduates including resume writing, interviewing, job search assistance, and career exploration.  Conduct in-class and out-of-class workshops regarding resume writing, interviewing, career exploration, and other job search skills.

3.     Coordinate on-campus recruiting, interviewing, transfer fairs, and career fairs. Participate in community-based career fairs.

4.     Collaborate with business and industry, Chambers, area professional organizations to provide information and recruit support (i.e., hiring) for graduates and programs.

5.     Constantly monitors, analyzes, and evaluates current scope of services offered through career development. Plans, implements, and directs new programs.

6.     Develops strong, ongoing relationships with area employers for the purpose of expanding employment opportunities for students and alumni.

1.     Coordinates communication with deans, department chairs, and other faculty to ensure that the career development department is meeting the needs of the academic departments.  Collaborate with Workforce and Community Development to assist in finding job placement opportunities for our graduates. Develop and implement, internships, apprenticeships, earn and learn programs and other work-based learning opportunities, as well as determine students’ career assistance needs utilizing You Science and other software applications. Provide placement information for use by career/technical program advisory committees and other internal and external partners.

 Guide and assist in collecting AAS and technical certificate earners data in order to prepare statistical reports for the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC), Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) and for internal academic and administrative departmental use. Work with Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Assessment, and Planning (IEAP) to procure data for reports.

 Develop, implement and sustain annual operational plan and budget management for career development including all operations and staffing matters.

 Supervise staff, serve on multiple committees (Curriculum Development, Veterans Support, and others as assigned); participate in professional organizations, such as the National Association of College’s and Employers (NACE) and others, staff development and other entities that enhance and support the College’s mission and values.

Job Requirements: 

·    Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution

·    Five years’ experience in job placement, career services, human resources, organizational development, personnel employment services, or college student services. 

Career development facilitator training would be beneficial.

Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time work experience.

As this new department continues to grow and evolve:

Knowledge of current trends in career services/development; workforce development/human resources recruitment is essential when planning and developing new programs and services for constituents;

Knowledge of Fair Labor Standards Act and related laws is needed; 

Understanding business environments and experience in the business community lends itself to effective communication and relationship-building with area business and industry, Chambers of Commerce/Workforce Development;

Skills in planning, implementing, promoting and evaluating programs and activities;

Knowledge and skills in marketing/promoting programs and events; 

Strong communications skills – oral and written – and ability to effectively communicate to diverse groups/individuals;

Strong networking and collaboration skills;

Time management skills;

Computer/technology skills – Microsoft Office, Banner, social media, etc.

This position involves regular large-scale programmatic decisions along with a high degree of customer service – involving independent decision-making - which positively affect the College’s success toward fulfilling its mission, goals and objectives. Must be able to engage in the College’s mission and values.

Magnitude of Impact: 

The Director is in the community and interacting with individuals outside of the College and, as a representative of the College, must maintain a professional demeanor.  Whether it be discussing a business’ workforce/training/education needs and the College’s ability to provide candidates or programs of the business, recruiting partners (business/professional organizations/individuals) to assist with career development activities or other interactions, the experience needs to be positive, otherwise, the relationship between the parties could be damaged and result in lack of business and community support for the College (academic areas/programs, experiential learning opportunities –internships, apprenticeships, co-ops, career/employment opportunities, funding/donations-i.e. Foundation).  This could be an immediate to long-term result of these actions.  If a negative result was to happen, anyone could be called upon to intervene – faculty, dean, supervisor, on up to upper administration (up to and including the President).   This position involves regular large-scale programmatic decisions along with a high degree of customer service – involving independent decision-making -  which positively affect the College’s success toward fulfilling its mission, goals and objectives

Responsibility for Accuracy:

The data collected for the many reports concerning placement of graduates must be accurate.  This data is maintained in a database which has checks and balances.  The Director, Career Development, as well as the Technical Clerk IV check the data for integrity. Social media content must be accurate – providing incorrect information could result in miscommunication, confusion, and ill will. Corrections should be made in the very short-term.

Financial Impact:

Responsible for budget and upkeep of office equipment (computers, printers, copiers, etc.)

Major financial impact of Career Development is collection and accuracy of data for the performance funding report. 

Budgetary: The Director is responsible for all budgetary matters related to the department.  Budget is $156,600.

Judgement and Decisions: The majority of decisions is made without referral to supervisor. 

Nature of Contacts:

Faculty: 

Technical (AAS) Programs Faculty and staff from all campuses in order to serve AAS and certificate pursuing students at all locations (in regards to placement/employment). To remain up-to-date on programs/training.

All academic and AAS faculty to inform/educate career readiness competencies and other Career Services activities/programs that are beneficial to the students.

Staff: Human Resources, Counseling Services, SEAL, Stay Strong Student Success Center, etc.

Students/Alumni:  Guiding and coaching students in job readiness skills (resume, interviewing, etc.)

Business/Chambers/Workforce Development/External Constituents:

Must have working relationships with Chambers of Commerce and businesses of many types in the Engineering and Business arenas for workforce needs—placing AAS/certificate earners in jobs.

Recruiting and collaborating with businesses to offer career development/readiness events for our students.

Providing technical assistance to Chambers/Workforce Development when recruiting new businesses to the area.

Provide information to employers (procedures and information on programs/degrees) and sometimes to persuade (interviewing/referring students, graduates for employment); to discuss workplace needs

Leadership: This position directly supervises 3 full-time employees

Physical Demands: Normal physical demands for an office with some requirements for remaining stationary and moving about to present workshops, career fairs, chamber events, etc. Must be able to set up for events, which may include lifting, bending, etc. On occasion, director must participate in company/manufacturing tours and meetings.

Hazards: Very low probability of injury or illness due to working conditions.  Could be eye strain due to extensive computer work; potential injury when lifting/assisting with event set-ups.
