Section Editor

Chronicle Media, part of Gate House Media one of the largest media publishing companies in the country, is looking for a Section Editor to supervise the multiplatform production and content of an assigned section including but not limited to print section, website and social media.

This editor generates content for their assigned section and works with Senior Editors for its inclusion in the main products of The Augusta Chronicle as news dictates.

Requirements or Specifications:

• College degree required with Journalism major preferred.
• Should have strong communication skills can generate discussions, ask thought-provoking questions and convey ideas visually and verbally.
• Have a solid understanding of the digital news production process and an understanding of readers' expectations in the areas for which this editor is responsible.
• Must be honest, trustworthy, accurate and consistent in dealing with sources, reporters, designers, peers, and supervisors.
• Have the ability to recognize news and the urgency of breaking news, taking into consideration both content and production capabilities on all platforms.
• Must be able to work well with others and across departmental lines.
• Computer operation, including typing and multimedia skills.
• Must abide by all company policies regarding ethics and social media

Experience and Training:

• Candidates should have at least three years of experience in reporting, writing, editing and design. Have an understanding of how to maximize our news coverage and urgency on all platforms.
• This person needs to be a strong leader and have sharp news judgment, sound ethics and values, strong organizational skills and an eye for detail.
• This person also must be resourceful and willing to explore new and creative ways of getting things done.
• Knowledge of legal and government structures helpful.

Working Conditions:

Works in a fast-paced environment. Position requires some nights and weekends.

Essential Job Functions of Position:

• Planning, development and execution of content of each section edition
• Responsible for maximizing our news coverage and urgency on all platforms.
• Editing and writing for the targeted audiences.
• Works with other editors, full-time staffers for various content requirements.
• Recruiting and encouraging community engagement and contributions to the newspaper's and website's content.
• Coordinate and grow pool of correspondents with various areas of expertise, skills.
• Represent the news organization and its products in the community at appropriate hours, taking initiative to build strategic partnerships.
• Strong sense of ethics and the ability to articulate them to staff and community.
• Communicating and budgeting with Center for News & Design and Chronicle copy desk
• Proofreading.
• Perform tasks/duties as assigned by the Executive Editor.
