EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Mechanic

Position Summary: We are looking for a Mechanic to join our team to perform journey-level diagnostic repair and maintenance work on transit buses, vans and trucks.

The person in this position will inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects in diesel and gasoline powered buses and vehicles, including engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and heating/air conditioning systems. This position also diagnoses and dismantles engines, transmissions, airbrakes and alternators to determine need for overhauling. The person in this position will additionally, overhaul and align wheels and air brakes, and repair pumps, lights, steering gears and other parts. This position is also responsible for completing records of work performed, parts used and time worked. The person in this position will road test vehicles to assist in diagnosing and checking completed work. This position is also responsible for providing emergency road service to disabled vehicles.

This position reports to the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor.

Salary Range: The Mechanic position starts at $30.19/hr, $31.70/hr after 6 months, and $33.29 after one year. This position is represented by the IAM Local Lodge 282, which requires membership within 30 days of employment, an initiation fee and monthly dues.

Hours of Work: The Vehicle Maintenance department has several shifts on weekdays and Saturdays. Day shift is from 7:00am - 3:30pm and Night shift is from 3:30pm - 11:00pm. Shifts are assigned on the basis of seniority.

QUALIFICATIONS

Kitsap Transit employees who wish to apply must have a satisfactory performance and attendance record. Kitsap Transit Operators with any of the following criteria in the last twelve months are excluded from recruitment opportunities:

  • a current Decision Making Leave or higher in the Safety category
  • more than two held customer complaints
  • more than four unscheduled absences
  • more than two late reports

Education and Experience: Four years journey-level diesel mechanic experience OR completion of training from a recognized diesel mechanic program like those conducted by the Automotive Society of Engineers, the Universal Technical Institute, automotive factories etc. and two years of journey-level mechanic experience. Transit or school bus maintenance experience is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Following are some highlights of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be successful in this position.

  • Methods of overhauling and repairing diesel, gasoline and propane powered equipment
  • Materials, tools and equipment used in the repair of diesel, gasoline and propane powered equipment
  • Safe working practices
  • Tune-up of gasoline and diesel engines
  • Diagnose malfunctions and determine appropriate repairs
  • Operate mechanical and electronic testing equipment
  • Use of mechanical hand tools
  • Interpreting wiring diagrams
  • Computerized diagnostics
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees, outside agencies and the general public
  • Working independently and interacting effectively and positively as a team member
  • Good interpersonal skills, including patience and courtesy, with team members and members of the public
  • Reacting with sound judgment under stress while doing several things at once
  • Following oral and written instructions

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Work is performed both inside and outside the shop. The incumbent must be able to perform work in a standing position 60% of the time with walking estimated at 35% of the shift. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds without assistance, climb ladders up to 12 feet, frequent balancing, stooping, reaching, grasping and fingering actions are required.

Other Requirements: Must be able to acquire and maintain a Class B Washington State commercial driver's license with a passenger endorsement and air brake restriction removed. Must maintain a good driving record throughout employment. The incumbent must be able to obtain a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard security clearance.
