The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. Its mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. IHME carries out a range of projects within different research areas including the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors; Future Health Scenarios; Costs and Cost Effectiveness; Local Burden of Disease; Resource Tracking; and Impact Evaluations. The aim is to provide policymakers, donors, and researchers with the highest-quality quantitative evidence base to make decisions that achieve better health.

IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Finance Manager to join the IHME Financial Planning and Operations team (FP&O). IHME is a rapidly growing organization that is looking for someone to ensure that we are managing and improving our financial systems to be efficient, intelligent, and adaptable.  The Finance Manager is responsible for orchestrating the overall rhythm of business for the FP & O team.  This position will supervise a team of financial analysts who implement and carry out key financial management products and processes for the Institute under the director of the Chief Strategy and Operations Officer.  The Finance Manager will be an adept project manager that ensures timeliness on the delivery of required products from their team for internal and external audiences. They will also be responsible for communication efforts between IHME, the UW and external partners (i.e. donors, Gates Foundation) in regards to financial matters to ensure completeness, compliance and accuracy of needed financial information to ensure IHME’s financial stability and health. We are looking for someone that exhibits competence in the following areas:  analytic assessment, project management, communication, supervision and development of their staff, an ability to pivot easily, and make decisions that can have wide impacts across the organization.  This position is contingent on project funding availability.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage financial analyst team to include: hiring, training, managing workflow, strategic team planning, guiding priority setting, and contributing to professional growth.
  • Lead regular reporting meetings with specific budget owners, PI’s and functional team leads to identify potential risks and opportunities as well as to inform progress toward annual operating targets.
  • Develop, mentor, and train Financial Analysts, Junior Financial Analysts and Fiscal Specialists as it pertains to managing the budgets, developing forecasts, costing, and working with PI’s on the review of their grant funding.
  • Creation of reports, software implementation, and tools for budgeting and forecasting.
  • Review and analyze monthly financial results and develop mechanisms to provide regular updates to senior leadership.
  • Identify and explain budget variances and provide recommendations accordingly.
  • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting data for the Board, organizational leaders, University offices, and donors.
  • Main point of contact as the financial steward between IHME, School of Medicine, UW Central Finance Offices, Donors and Sponsors. Interpret policies and regulations concerning the Institute’s financial activities, ensuring compliance with the University’s policies and procedures as well as guidelines from the federal government, state, and other research project sponsors.
  • Update and develop IHME policies, procedures, and guidelines for IHME-wide financial processes.
  • Oversee the continuous improvement of financial processes and systems to meet the evolving needs of the organization to achieve best practices and optimal output.

    IHME named support contact for UW Finance Transformation Program (UWFT). Attend relevant meetings to learn about status updates, provide input for IHME’s financial health during the build out, provide university with required information about IHME that will be implemented in the system, disseminate information to relevant participants at IHME, attend relevant trainings for system use, and lead IHME staff in the roll-out of the new system.

    REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, and five years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years’ project management experience, including demonstrated ability to think independently, to be flexible and to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Two years’ experience mentoring and supervising staff.

    Additional Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience assessing strategic priorities, creatively identify solutions, and implementing plans systematically and with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated acumen with financial and problem-solving skills. Experience with data analysis, modeling, and forecasting.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel/financial modeling.
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral; ability to build and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization and effectively explain complex issues and concepts in simple, understandable language.
  • Ability to quickly adapt and adjust to changes in organizational processes, compliance rules, and University of Washington guidelines.

    DESIRED

  • Experience with University of Washington systems such as Enterprise Data Warehouse and My Financial Desktop.
  • Familiarly with a major research university setting or non-profit research organizations.
  • Experience with data integration.
  • Advanced level of Microsoft Access and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with enterprise-wide relational databases, multi-dimensional cubes, scripting languages, SQL server (including SQL Server Analysis Services), and Business Intelligence reporting tools.
  • Desire to work in Global Health field.
