Schedule:
9:00 am - 5:30 pm and includes a weekend and holiday rotation

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Performs all duties including, but not limited to: typing and PC applications, filing, business machine functions, telephone and written communications, and assists in the facilitation of quality patient care in collaboration with the Registered Nurse.

  • Performs tasks that do not require nursing judgements or administration of medications.

  • The Unit Clerk will float throughout the Med Surg division

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

High school graduate or equivalent, business school or formal secretarial training a plus. One to two years’ minimum experience preferred. Patient care experience, mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity preferred.

BLS/CPR certification and first aid training required.

Participates in orientation and continuing education and updates and maintains knowledge and skills related to specific areas of expertise.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

PC and appropriate software knowledge, knowledge of office equipment and supplies. A solid understanding of department related terminology. Good communication skills both oral and written as well as good interpersonal skills required. Customer service oriented. Service specific skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

Office/Clinical setting. Exposure class I.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Light to Medium work (depending on the unit assignment). Requires standing, walking, sitting, lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying.

WORK CONTACT GROUP:

All services, employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, vendors, various regulatory and professional agency staff.

General Performance Criteria:

  • Has a working knowledge of phone system fax machine, copier and computer systems.
  • Maintains files in a timely and organized fashion.
  • Maintains a work environment that is clean and free of clutter.
  • Drafts memos and other correspondence after receiving general instructions.
  • Answers the telephone and routes to the person. When personnel are unavailable for telephone calls, records and delivers messages.
  • Greets visitors and ensures that each person waits in comfort with definite expectations of when and how they will be served.
  • Sorts and distributes departmental mail
  • Participates in staff and employee meetings.
  • Operates and maintains equipment safely.
  • Arrives at the job, appointments and meetings on time, dressed in hospital approved attire.
  • Presents self in a professional manner (neat, clean, appropriately dressed).
  • Works to the best of his/her ability. Flexible, adaptable to change.
  • Follows rules, policies and directives and seeks clarification if necessary.
  • Exhibits a commitment to teamwork, follows instructions and completes tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Adheres to the organizational rules outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and good rapport with colleagues, patients and visitors. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offers solutions, and participates in their resolution.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Health. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
  • Complies with expectations and duties established by each clinical unit/division in support of clinical staff and patients.
  • Supports in the delivery of basic patient needs, including answering call bells, providing personal items to patients, supporting simple tasks under the direct supervision and in the presence of a nurse.
