OLD ADOBE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION GROUNDSKEEPER/MAINTENANCE DEFINITION: Under direction of the Director of Facilities and Transportation, performs grounds landscaping, maintenance, and gardening work; performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled activities related to the maintenance and repair of school buildings and facilities; and performs related work as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Groundskeeper/Maintenance Worker classification is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series in that the incumbents must be able to perform semi-skilled and skilled work with little supervision. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: •Uses approved methods of planting, pruning and caring for hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers; •Uses and cares for gardening materials, tools and equipment; •Has knowledge of common plant diseases and insect pests and the approved methods and materials used in controlling and eradicating them; •Is responsible for tools, materials, and equipment used in gardening work, and in the maintenance, repair and construction of sprinkler systems, concrete walks and chain link fences; •Participates in preventive maintenance, in emergency repair, and in new construction; •When assigned to a particular craft, may participate in any of the following: alters, repairs, and constructs articles and structures of wood, performing necessary mill or cabinet work; repairs, installs, services and maintains electrical systems including power circuits, and control equipment and wires new or altered buildings; •Installs water piping, repairs and replaces pipes, valves, fittings, and other fixtures, wipes and flushes joints, cleans out drains and obstructions in water and sewer systems; •Services and repairs varied heating and air conditioning equipment such as heaters, heat exchangers, pumps, and ventilating equipment; •Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the above trades; •Lays out work and estimates job materials, and reads and interprets blueprints; •Performs other related work as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of: •Approved methods of planting, pruning and caring for hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers; •Gardening materials, tools and equipment and their use and care; •Common plant diseases and insect pests and the approved methods and materials used in controlling and eradicating them with ability to be licensed; •Tools, materials, and equipment used in gardening work, and in the maintenance, repair and construction of sprinkler systems, concrete walks and chain link fences; •Standard practices of one or more of the building trades including materials, tools, and procedures; •Applicable code requirements. Ability to: •Perform heavy physical labor and lift a minimum of 75 pounds using correct body mechanics; Use and care for tools of the trade; •Mix and apply insecticides and herbicides; •Operate power driven grounds maintenance equipment; •Understand and carry out oral and written directions; •Work from plans and specifications; •Train and supervise personnel as assigned; •Work cooperatively with others. •Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties; •Maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; •Learn and follow the practices, rules, and regulations of the District and the school to which assigned; •Maintain the confidentiality of school related information. EDUCATION: •High School graduate or the equivalent. EXPERIENCE: •Two years grounds maintenance experience and any combination equivalent to completion of an apprenticeship in one of the trades, or one year of experience in one or more of the building trades. LICENSE REQUIRED: •A California Driver’s License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles and an Agricultural Pest Control Operator’s License.
