Summary

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Nutritionist II to join the North Regional Team A WIC and MSS/ICM Team. This is a lead position, providing support and work direction/training to assigned staff. This person is also responsible for performing the full scope of Nutritionist duties and providing nutrition program coordination for a specific geographical area. Duties include individual and group nutrition, assessments, counseling, education and evaluations, in addition to planning, coordinating, and evaluating nutrition programs for the site and community. This position will serve clients in the office and in the field. During COVID-19 precautions, the majority of services will be provided remotely via phone or video.

Job Duties

  • Work individually and together with team to meet the needs of individuals and families from a multiplicity of cultural, racial, and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Provide healing-centered service to clients, grounded in in the principles of equity and social justice.
  • Actively participate in team activities and deliverables, demonstrating flexibility and respect towards others.
  • Conduct individual sessions to assess client's nutritional needs using anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary information, for clients within WIC, MSS, ICM and MNT programs; implement and document care plans as necessary. 
  • Assess the changing needs of medically complex and high-risk clients, primarily pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children. 
  • Accurately obtain and document anthropometric measurements for infants, children and adults. 
  • Provide health care education with other multi-disciplinary team members regarding nutrition and other health related topics as needed. 
  • Provide breastfeeding education and support to pregnant women and new mothers. 
  • Regularly utilize clinic practice management software and data systems, including Cascades and Epic. 
  • Review, monitor and schedule the work of assigned staff in WIC program; problem solve day-to-day operational issues as assigned by the site supervisor. 
  • Assist in the staff hiring process; provide input to performance evaluations; provide day-to-day coaching and on-the job training to new employees and WIC staff as assigned; ensure WIC competency requirements are met. 
  • Collaborate with site supervisor and program staff to coordinate designated quality assurance activities and ensure compliance with set standards. 
  • Oversee the collection and analysis of site-specific data to identify populations at risk and participate in research into and improvement of health care delivery. 
  • Coordinate care with team members and other health care providers and make referrals to appropriate services; provide and document case management as appropriate. 
  • Work collaboratively with North Regional Team B RDII and supervisors to ensure team workflows meet both WIC and First Steps standards, strategize and implement workflow changes as needed, and provide or facilitate community outreach efforts related to WIC and First Steps.
  • Develop and present educational information to clients individually, in classes or to community groups on nutrition and food related topics. 
  • Participate in the collection and analysis of data to identify populations at risk and participate in research and improvement efforts related to health care delivery. 
  • Participate collaboratively with the community to assess and address health issues, including the development of health programs. 
  • Develop and implement nutrition standards for targeted populations such as prenatal and high-risk patients. 
  • Provide technical assistance and nutrition consultation; may provide in-service training for staff. Precept nutrition interns from various educational institutions.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Current Registered Dietitian (RD) registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration or have the ability to attain registration by date of hire. 
  • Bachelor or Master of Science, or Master of Public Health in Nutrition 
  • Must be Washington State Certified Dietitian (CD) or be able to obtain within 30 days. 
  • A National Provider Identifier (NPI) must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment. 
  • Candidates selected will also be required to successfully complete the department credentialing process prior to hire and maintain credentialing for the duration of employment. 
  • Documentation of current BLS CPR certification with AED training required at time of offer. CPR/AED Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement.
  • Ability to obtain Washington State Medical Assistant-Registered or Phlebotomist license within 30 days of hire in order to perform hemoglobin/hematocrit testing on WIC participants. 
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in providing direct client nutrition services in a health care setting, preferably WIC, MSS and ICM services. 
  • Demonstrated experience providing nutrition education in a group setting; as well as clear ability to organize, lead, and facilitate group discussions and staff training. 
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, scheduling, coordinating and evaluating the work of assigned staff. 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide patients with birth control, STD, HIV/AIDS, and pregnancy options related education. 
  • Proficiency using computer programs within a Windows environment, and the ability to use drop down menus, point and click software, multiple screens and the ability to enter data with a high degree of accuracy. 
  • Ability to model and maintain good interpersonal interactions with clients and co-workers as a member of a multi-disciplinary public health team working with a diverse multi-cultural population.
  • Working knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques and personnel procedures. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in quality assurance activities. 
  • Working knowledge of funding resources for nutrition services. 
  • Ability to lift and lower a child weighing up to 35 pounds onto a surface more than 4 feet high with or without accommodation. 
  • Ability to travel in a timely manner within King County to locations that may have limited access to public transportation. 
 
 DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Master of Science or Master of Public Health in Nutrition plus two years of experience
  • Established skills in quality improvement processes in a large Public Health organization
  • Demonstrated advanced leadership, group process, and group facilitation skills
  • Previous experience coordinating breastfeeding promotion and support activities
  • Demonstrated experience with program monitors and audits
  • Experience developing and modifying electronic charting and documentation systems for nutrition services
  • Demonstrated advanced Excel skills
  • Familiarity with WIC System (Cascades) and/or EPIC electronic health record (EHR). 
  • Work experience providing WIC and/or First Steps (Maternity Support Services and Infant Case Management).
  • Work experience providing training on nutrition services and principles to other staff. 
  • Established knowledge of local health and social service resources available in the community and skill in establishing working relationships with community partners. 
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish. (Desired but not required.)

SCHEDULE: This is a full time (40 hours/week) career service position. This full-time (1.0 FTE), position typically works Monday through Friday. Hours may vary, anywhere from 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, depending on assigned work location. There may be extended hours beyond this and weekends in the future to align with program needs.
Some of the work associated with this position will be performed remotely, at least through July 5, 2021 in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite.  Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.

WORK LOCATION: The candidate will work at various Public Health Centers and satellite offices in King County, based on business need. These locations include Northshore Public Health at Totem Lake, Bothell HealthPoint, Shoreline and Lake City. Home site will be at Northshore Public Health. This position will involve some telework from home during COVID-19 precautions, and may also need to occasionally report to a PH location. Candidates are responsible to ensure they have the necessary space, furniture, and environment for telework. The candidate must have the ability to travel to sites throughout King County and drive a King County-issued car.
