Summary: 

Provides respiratory therapy services to neonatal through geriatric patients in accordance with a physician’s written and/or verbal orders, and per established procedures/protocols/the clinical standards of the Respiratory Therapy department. Instructs patients as to the procedures, medications, nature of therapy, and equipment involved in treatment. Maintains competency/proficiency with requisite skills and all required/necessary job responsibilities as dictated by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), the Joint Commission, the Ohio Medical Board, and the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). Responsibilities:

1. Performs, assesses, and responds to clinical/laboratory data for the cardio-pulmonary system.

2. Analyzes arterial blood gases and/or electrolytes.

3. Administers supplemental oxygen.

4. Administers hyperinflation therapy using positive pressure techniques while following approved procedure(s).

5. Administers Aerosol Therapy per approved procedures(s), and administers medications by either aerosol, oral, or tracheal route for the treatment of cardiopulmonary disease.

6. Performs bronchopulmonary hygiene therapy using postural drainage-clapping/positive expiratory pressure therapy/vibrating/other newly identified techniques while following approved procedure(s).

7. Demonstrates competency with all forms of mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive).

8. Maintains patient airway care.

9. Instructs patients in the self-application of therapy, identifying procedures, the purpose of therapy, equipment function/care, and demonstrating the appropriate techniques; ensures that the patient understands all components of the therapy.

10. Evaluates the patient’s clinical status following the completion of all interventions; reports applicable information to the appropriate health care provider; documents information regarding the patient into department and hospital records; communicates patient progress appropriately throughout the department chain of command.

11. Assists in the orientation of entry-level therapists and health care students by providing shift leadership, mentoring, procedure demonstration, evaluation, and feedback on activities related to job responsibilities.

12. Attends to/contributes to appropriate patient care information at department/physician service patient care rounds.

13. Performs electronic data entry for identified procedures, including order entry/verification, patient scheduling, billing, improved operational performance, and all other activities identified as needed to ensure complete documentation in medical/department records.

14. Cleans, processes, and verifies the functionality of all related respiratory care equipment/supplies prior to patient use.

15. Maintains competency and current knowledge of all respiratory equipment/procedures/medications.

16. Provides clear and concise written/verbal communication.

17. Responds to all emergency pages from assigned unit(s).

18. Presents, participates, and/or views departmental educational activities/presentations in accordance with departmental policies.

19. Practices safe cost containment, and remains current with professional changes in the specialty.

20. Demonstrates professional behaviors while interacting with patients, peers, and other members of the health care team.

21. Utilizes good time management and prioritization skills to coordinate one’s own shift activities.

22. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in continuing education courses, professional organizations, seminars/workshops, reading current literature, and/or maintaining professional contacts in the community; monitors and assesses the appropriateness of emerging trends/strategies, and adopting techniques as deemed appropriate.

23. Incorporates principles of teamwork in the resolution, completion, and follow-up of responsibilities.

24. Displays sensitivity to and understanding of various cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

 

 

Qualifications:

Required:

Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy.
Possess and maintain an active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Possess and maintain an active Respiratory Care Professional (RCP) license from the Ohio Medical Board.
Possess and maintain BLS Certification from the AHA.
Reliable transportation to travel to designated MetroHealth locations.
Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred:
3 years of experience as a RRT in a critical care environment.
Extensive experience with mechanical ventilation, airway management, and hemodynamic monitoring.
Possess a Pediatrics Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
Possess an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) from the AHA.

Physical Requirements:
May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day.
May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Finger dexterity to operate office equipment required.
May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion.
Ability to communicate in face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications.
Ability to see computer monitor and departmental documents.
Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.
Requires some exposure to chemicals.
