Broadcast Engineer and IT Technician

Northern California Public Media (NorCal) is currently seeking a Broadcast Engineer & IT technician to join the engineering team for our broadcast facility which includes our television stations KRCB and KPJK, and our FM stations KRCB-FM and KRCG-FM. Based in Sonoma County, CA, NorCal serves the San Francisco Bay area broadcast region. NorCal offers PBS and NPR programming to the community.

The Broadcast Engineer & IT Technician is resourceful and knowledgeable about the flow of broadcast operations and equipment maintenance, and collaborates well with other departments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair technical equipment and computer-based systems associated with the operation of NorCal to broadcast engineering standards.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings to effectively install coax, wiring, and cabling in addition to physical equipment, and utilize such drawings to troubleshoot problems during and after installation.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electronic and mechanical equipment that is required for the operation of our facilities.
  • Understand the signal flow of analog and digital video, audio, and RF signals through our complex production and broadcast systems in order to assist operations and production staff.
  • Work with the engineering staff to ensure proper equipment operation and provide optimum quality, while adhering to all FCC rules and regulations.
  • Diagnose problems using standard practices and test equipment including, but not limited to, audio monitors, waveform and vectorscope, oscilloscope, and spectrum analyzer.
  • Able to identify and prioritize the repair and replacement of equipment.
  • Work closely with the other departments in the maintenance and operation of their associated equipment.
  • Have in-depth knowledge of computer networking, cabling, software installation, and repairs
  • Assist our outsourced IT management company in the daily end-user issues that arise.
  • Must have a service-orientated attitude towards staff and co-workers.
  • Install and maintain update of various software and hardware packages in computer-based equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand the operation of the NorCal broadcast air-chain
  • General knowledge and understanding of UHF transmitter, ENG, SNG and RF microwave systems
  • General knowledge of the rules and regulations of the FCC
  • Use and knowledge of specialized and standard test equipment
  • Advanced computer skills preferred
  • This position requires an “on-call” status when emergencies or breakdown of critical equipment occurs to the operation of NorCal
  • Maintain and update the spare parts inventory and ordering of replacement parts as needed
  • Must have the ability to make decisions and take prompt action independently
  • Must be able to work alone and unsupervised when necessary
  • Must have attention to detail with great accuracy
  • Ability to understand and teach the operation of some technical equipment to persons in other departments of NorCal

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)

What We Offer:
