GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The purpose of this position is to manage the Global Ministries Child and Elder Sponsorship Program on behalf of the Division of Overseas Ministries, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Wider Church Ministries, United Church of Christ. The main focus of the ministry is to provide support to children and elders around the world through sponsorship by church constituents. The manager matches sponsors with children and elders around the world who are identified by partners. The ministry is committed to securing sponsors to help provide assistance with housing, clothing, food, education basic health care, and/or other needs for children and elders, as determined by the partner.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Promote the Child and Elder Sponsorship Program to potential, new and existing sponsors including local churches and individuals within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ.
  • Develop policies and procedures for the Global Ministries Child and Elder Sponsorship program, including working collaboratively with Global Ministries’ area executives to develop policies and procedures to establish new Child and Elder Sponsorship partners and to manage existing partnerships.  
  • Assign sponsorship cases according to requests and submitting pertinent data to sponsors from program sites regarding individual children and elders.
  • Implement concrete ways to strengthen relationships between sponsors, children and elders including but not limited to promoting correspondence between the children, elders and sponsors.
  • Interpret the work and mission of the Global Ministries Child and Elder Sponsorship Program throughout the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) through preparation of printed and electronic resources, correspondence, telephone communication, and public speaking engagements for the manager.
  • Develop and nurture effective public relations and promote participation in the program throughout the two churches by developing a professional and courteous relationship with current and prospective sponsors and responding promptly to written and verbal inquiries.
  • Work individually and collaboratively to develop promotional, visual and display materials for workshops and presentation of the Child and Elder Sponsorship Program.
  • Oversee and work closely with others in developing web and graphic designs for electronic communication for promoting and advertising the program, increasing sponsorships, and on-line giving.
  • Ensure the integrity of the program by developing relationships with overseas partners and site administrators, monitoring and evaluating the functioning of the sponsor programs through requested reports and on-site visits by the program manager, in collaboration with the Area Executive for the respective region.
  • Raise funds to help support the administrative costs of the Child and Elder Sponsorship Program working collaboratively with Global Ministries Resource Development team, UCC OPTIC (Philanthropy), and the Minister for Offering Development and Grants.
  • Plan international mission trips for program sponsors with a primary focus on visits to program partners and additional visits to other local partners, with the respective Area Executive.
  • Facilitate communication among program partners, Global Ministries area offices and others to whom the office relates to ensure the future direction and continuation of the program.
  • Develop fund-raising materials, and maintain correspondence with supporters and sponsors to foster and retain long term financial commitments for the continuance of the program.
  • Process and reconcile accounts in collaboration with Financial Services in order to prepare required documents for disbursement of funds and reports to Child and Elder Sponsorship partners and monitor the program’s budget accounts and expenses.
  • Oversee the processing of contributions and invoices to insure timeliness and improve the processing of future gifts. Refine and manage the efficiency of the program by maintaining accurate and current sponsor files.
  • Prepare written reports for Board meetings and as requested by supervisor.
  • Supervise and direct the part-time Program Assistant.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate General Minister and supervisor.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • College degree in related field or equivalent experience or a combination of both.
  • Knowledge and understanding of and experience with global children’s issues and a commitment to global Christian mission in its broad range of concerns.
  • Knowledge of the software systems utilized to record and acknowledge individual sponsorship donations and pledges.
  • Experience in office administration; ability to organize work, set priorities, and motivate oneself. Must be proficient in use of the computer, including word processing and data base applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and English language skills to interact sensitively and effectively, verbally and in writing, with persons from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability and desire to work and function effectively collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently, exercising a high degree of judgment and discretion.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within and outside the United States as required.
  • Demonstrated fund raising experience and supervisory experience.
  • Experience processing and reconciling accounts and monitoring program budget and expenses.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite, RaisersEdge and related software used by the program is important.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) structure is highly desirable.
