Position Summary:
We are seeking a Volunteer Coordinator (Project/Program Manager II) to work collaboratively with Parks staff and external partners to design, organize and lead approximately 100 volunteer service projects from start to finish annually . Comprehensive project management for each event includes communications with community members and volunteers, logistics coordination, restoration workplan development and implementation, design of agenda and environmental education, leading project - either with a partner or independently/solo, restoration data collection and documentation, and post-event follow up with relevant staff and external volunteers.

This 18-month Special Duty Assignment/Term Limited Term position (SDA/TLT) is a great combination of direct outdoor leadership and environmental restoration planning, outreach and education. There is a lot of variation to each week, with room for creativity and collaboration with schools and volunteer groups to design impactful service learning events .

Our program values racial and social justice, and intersectional environmentalism. We support am expansive approach to community-based restoration and are seeking a team mate eager to learn and engage in great work in in Parks. This position is a key member of a small team that collaborates closely with workgroups throughout the agency. In addition to project management, this role supports all functions of the Volunteer Program, logistical needs, community engagement and partnership development.

Job Duties
  • Work collaboratively with Parks staff and external partners to design, organize and lead approximately 100 volunteer service projects from start to finish annually. Comprehensive project management for each event includes: pre-event communications and logistics, restoration workplan development and implementation, design of agenda and environmental/climate education, leading project - either with a partner or independently/solo, restoration data collection and documentation, and post-event follow up with relevant staff and external volunteers.
  • Engage neighborhoods, community organizations, corporations, small businesses, and schools, to connect people to our projects. Develop enduring and equitable partnerships with volunteer groups and organizations.
  • Support field-based youth programming and youth engagement by leading school service projects and contributing to creation of environmental science, climate change and restoration curriculum.
  • Prepare data and creative input as necessary for publicity materials, reports and other written documents relating to program. Participate in continuous improvement of program data collection, administrative and logistics systems.
  • Perform comprehensive logistical tasks related to volunteer projects such as; inventory and purchasing of tools and materials, development and maintenance of tool storage systems, basic tool care/repair and sharpening, washing work gloves.
Working Conditions
  • Work Location: Work will be hybrid. Administrative, planning work and some meetings will be conducted remotely (telecommute). Field work and in-person internal and external meetings will require travel to sites throughout King County. Two to three days per week may be working outdoors. There are several drop-in office spaces available for work if needed.
  • Work Schedule: T his position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. This full-time position works a 40-hour work week, Tuesday - Saturday, 6:30 am-3:00 pm, with some occasional nights and/or weekends as needed. Option for 4/10's Wednesday through Saturday 6:00 am-4:30 pm if desired.
  • Union Representation: This position is non-represented.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Professional experience in designing and leading high-quality environmental service projects in the field. Candidates should be comfortable leading small events up to 25 participants on their own and planning/leading larger events with additional staff members supporting them.
  • Experience in developing relationship-focused community and organizational partnerships with the goal of connecting the public more deeply to outdoor spaces.
  • Experience in working directly with youth and young adults outdoors doing environmental education and/or hands-on restoration service learning.
  • Demonstrated skill in integrating social and racial equity into all aspects of daily and big picture work including community engagement, restoration project planning and implementation, volunteer leadership, internal team communication. Candidate experience and materials should reflect a deep commitment to equity and actionable understanding of intersectional environmentalism.
  • Experience in restoration project development; multi-year restoration planning for volunteer restoration sites; experience identifying, working with and teaching others about noxious weeds and plant species indigenous to the Northwest.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with large (50+ participants) outdoor event design and planning, including creating multiple work stations, managing logistics, and mentoring other staff in leading groups of volunteers.
  • Experience training adults and staff colleagues in restoration skills, plant identification or other related topics.
  • Experience scheduling large quantity of events, managing online event registration, public communications, data collection and project documentation.
  • Experience drafting planting plans and ordering plants.
Licensing, Certification and Other Requirements
  • A valid driver's license at the time of appointment is required.
  • Current CPR and First Aid training, or ability to obtain with 60 days of hire.
  • Work includes indoor and outdoor settings. May be exposed to drafts, pollens, inclement weather, and uneven surfaces.
  • Requires occasional lifting and carrying supplies and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires stooping, standing, sitting or walking depending on nature of program or event.

Telecommuting Requirement:


The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly by telecommuting, with occasional onsite work and meetings, as influenced by business needs. ( See Working Conditions/Work Location information above. )

Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.


Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations .
