The Oregonian/OregonLive is looking for an editor who can build. Build trust. Build new audiences. Build something meaningful that will effect lasting change for our newsroom and coverage area. We’re looking for someone who will hold us accountable as we work to achieve our goals of a more diverse newsroom and produce daily coverage that reflects and reaches all Oregonians.

If you’re passionate about fair coverage of marginalized communities, love recruiting and hiring, understands how the media needs to be more inclusive and representative of the communities we cover, know how to build bridges across teams within a newsroom, have sharp editing skills, and are open to shaping how this position makes the biggest impact, we want to hear from you.

We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and we recognize we have work to do. We want someone who can challenge and inspire, help identify what we are doing right and what can be improved, and effect change. We want the person who fills this role to have agency over how that is done, though we definitely have ideas to help guide your work. You will have support and buy-in from other managers, including the Vice President of Content, our top editor. We have a track record of implementing change, open dialogue and holding each other accountable.

Here are a few examples of what we’re doing in our newsroom:

  • We have a longstanding Diversity Committee that holds a lot of sway in making decisions about coverage, and style and fairness issues.
  • Our High School Journalism Institute provides no-cost education for students who are from communities that are underrepresented in professional newsrooms.
  • Use of our Inclusive Journalism Checklist is part of the formal goals for every member of the newsroom to help check our implicit bias.
  • We set up a listening booth at an alternative high school to allow students to tell stories in their own voices.

Among other duties, here's what you'll be doing:

  • Help increase the diversity of our candidate pool, and work with newsroom management to support and retain staffers
  • Strategize with newsroom management on how to reach new audiences with content
  • Work with editors and reporters on source and coverage audits and identify DEI opportunities on every beat, and edit stories with a DEI focus

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • A track record of reporting on or editing coverage of underrepresented communities
  • At least 5-7 years of experience in a professional newsroom
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with others throughout the newsroom to achieve common goals
  • The ability to identify and reach out to communities who have not historically followed our coverage
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience managing others
  • A willingness to shape the role for maximum impact
  • Experience with newsletters, social media and podcasting is a plus
  • The ability to speak and report in more than one language is a plus

If you don’t meet all of these criteria, but are energetic and have great ideas, don’t let that stop you from reaching out. We want to hear what you have to say about how this position can have an impact in our newsroom and community.  Application deadline is August 22, 2022.
