ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

This position involves activities in three primary areas:

(1) Clinical responsibilities center around leading commercial space initiatives for UTMB. This includes, but is not limited to, medical evaluation of commercial spaceflight participants as well as direct flight surgeon operational support in the preflight, on-orbit, and postflight time periods. In addition, the faculty members will serve as the liaisons between the Aerospace Medicine Division and individual commercial space partners to help navigate training requirements for the residents and develop aerospace medicine curricula and potential future needs for both parties.

(2) Education responsibilities include teaching and mentoring students in the Aerospace Medicine Residency Program and the Combined Internal Medicine/Aerospace Medicine Residency Program. In addition, these positions will include teaching and mentoring students in the MPH Program; teaching in courses such as the Principles of Aviation and Space Medicine course and other courses with aerospace medicine content that may be developed.

(3) Research responsibilities include supporting grants and contracts with the FAA Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation (FAA COE CST), the NASA Human Research Program’s Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH), Human Health and Performance Contract (HHPC), and other organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.D., D.O. or equivalent degree
  • M.P.H. or equivalent degree
  • Board certification in a clinical medicine discipline such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine
  • Board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Aerospace) or board eligible
  • Texas Medical License or ability to obtain such license within 6 months of start date
  • Minimum of one year of experience in the practice of Aerospace Medicine

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in graduate medical education
  • Demonstrated success in research projects and publication of research results
  • Experience in providing medical support for human spaceflight activities
  • Senior Aviation Medical Examiner
  • Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) trained

SALARY: 

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
