SUMMER 202 3 KCPAO CIVIL DIVISION DIVERSITY LEGAL EXTERN SHIP PROGRAM

The Civil Division of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office ( KC PAO) has three legal extern ship position s available for diverse candidates for the summer of 2023 . These summer externship positions will run 10 week s, with one position reserved for students between their first and second years of law school. Externs must be able to work between 20-40 hours per week. Due to the ability to telecommute this summer, applicants enrolled in Seattle University School of Law's evening program are eligible but must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Purpose

The externship s are designed to give students a meaningful experience and exposure to our law practice and is an excellent way to become acquainted with the KCPAO , pursue an interest in civil law, and determine whether this is a future career path. The extern ship positions are unpaid at this time, but the law schools at both Seattle University and the University of Washington offer credit for externship positions .

About the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office
The Civil Division provides comprehensive legal services to King County government, including all County elected and appointed officials, department heads, and with the managers of numerous county agencies and departments. Serving in its role as an in-house law firm for the County, the Civil Division works closely with its clients in solving a wide range of legal problems by providing legal advice and representing King County and its employees in lawsuits filed in state or federal courts. Job Duties

The Civil Division, organized into seven sections, provides comprehensive legal services to King County government, including all County elected and appointed officials, department heads, and with the managers of numerous county agencies and departments. Our attorneys work closely with their clients in solving a wide range of legal problems by providing legal advice and representing King County in lawsuits filed in state or federal courts. The KC PAO also collaborates with client agencies to develop, fund, deliver, manage, and defend public projects, legislation, and initiatives that affect every aspect of civil society.

The e xtern s will do various projects for different sections of the Civil Division. Depending on the needs of the office at the time, externs may conduct legal research and drafting of legal memoranda and briefs; participate in depositions, mediations, court hearings , arbitrations, and trials ; and participate in or observe client advising .

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

One s ummer externs hip position is available to all currently enrolled law students, and one position is reserved for students between their first and second years of law school. Candidates must have a genuine interest in civil law and procedure; basic legal and writing skills; and willingness to work under deadlines . All externs are required to complete an application and pass a criminal history background check prior to working.

Consideration for Future Employment

The summer extern s will be evaluated carefully b y a supervising attorney. There is no guarantee that an externship will lead to a Rule 9 intern ship position or a future position with our office.
