King County Superior Court is accepting applications for Term-Limited Temporary Family Law Specialist positions. These positions are anticipated to end on December 31, 2022. These positions are benefits-eligible.

The responsibilities of this position include interviewing self-represented litigants, reviewing and researching cases and related statutes, drafting documents, and assisting litigants in a variety of ways. The position supports the Family Court Operations and Ex-Parte Departments.

Work location: Positions may be based in the King County Courthouse in Seattle and at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent. Incumbents will also be required to work at other Superior Court facilities.
Work schedule: This is a full-time position working 35 hours per week. This position is hourly and overtime-eligible. The work week is normally Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Variations from these hours may occur.

The following duties are not intended to represent the entire functional capacity of the position at the task level:
Interview a high-volume of self-represented litigants to determine what steps are necessary to establish, pursue and complete their case. Review and research case facts and issues; review files and documents and all other information relevant to the issues. Provide procedural advice; review pleadings and documents for compliance with applicable law and any previously entered orders. Perform support calculations as needed.
Review cases for the Guardianship and Probate Review Calendar. Use discretion to draft court orders in guardianship, probate, trust and minor settlement cases for Ex-Parte Commissioners' review.
Ensure that litigants are in compliance with their case schedules, statutes, and state and local court rules for Status, Non-Compliance, Non-Parental Case Review and Final Decree calendars. Relay key information to the Court Commissioners to clarify circumstances of litigants' cases.
Perform research of statutes, cases and local rules regarding family law, probate and guardianship matters. Draft instructions and create and develop alternative methods for presentation of instructions/information.
Facilitate communication between judicial officers, court staff, and the public. Screen requests for contact with judicial officers, and respond to various questions from attorneys, litigants, other staff and the general public.
Participate in various Superior Court committees; network with various legal programs in the county, state, and nationwide.
Perform other duties of a similar nature and level.
Associate's degree and five years of experience in court procedures and processes, or Bachelor's and two years; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Court-related experience, specifically in the area of Family Law is preferred. Knowledge of court rules, procedures and processes in all aspects of domestic relations and guardianship/probate law is desirable. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, and experience working with diverse populations and dealing with volatile clients. Must possess knowledge of interviewing techniques, and be able to disseminate complex information to litigants of various educational and social levels.
Must be proficient with various computer software applications including Microsoft Office programs and database management. Must have knowledge of and ability to learn specialized software applications.
Special requirements: The ability to reliably travel throughout the County is required. Finalists are subject to the Washington State Patrol criminal background check and a reference check. Criminal background records are not automatically disqualifying.
