Gettysburg Municipal Authority is seeking a full-time Meter Reader/Service Technician.

This position involves reading and the maintenance of water meters, including but not limited to, installing, calibrating, repairing, cleaning, testing. Also handles customer complaints, concerns regarding high usage, leaking plumbing fixtures etc. Performs other work as assigned.

This position is full-time work (40 hours per week) with benefits as outlined in the GMA’s Policy Manual. Work is performed during regular business hours, and additional time as may be necessary to complete scheduled meter reading, service work orders and assist other personnel during emergencies, additionally the position is subject to 24-hour call outs.

Definition

This position involves reading and the maintenance of water meters, including but not limited to, installing, calibrating, repairing, cleaning, testing. Also handles customer concerns regarding high usage, leaking plumbing etc. Performs other work as assigned.

An employee in this class may perform duties requiring strenuous physical effort and exposure to variable weather and traffic working conditions. Tasks regularly involve muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, digging, operation of hand tools, and lifting.

This position is full time work (40 hours per week) with benefits as outlined in the GMA’s Policy Manual. Work is performed during regular business hours, and additional time as may be necessary to complete scheduled meter reading, service work orders and assist other personnel during emergencies, additionally the position is subject to 24-hour call outs.

Work is performed under the direction of the Utilities Manager but requires the ability to work along with Finance department staff, Distribution and Collection staff and alone with minimum supervision.

Duties

Read meters and record readings by electronic equipment and or manually.
Test meters and identify meter malfunctions.
Install new meters, repair or replace existing meters and remote read devices.
Entry of data into computer systems via electronic devices, phone, tablets, computers etc.
Post notices and perform shut-offs when instructed by supervisor.
Assist other personnel in the performance of their work as assigned.
Respond to customer complaints/concerns regarding high usage, internal plumbing concerns etc.
Perform routine meter and internal plumbing inspections.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Understanding of and use of appropriate safety equipment and procedures for performing the duties of the job.
Basic knowledge of computers and data entry techniques.
Ability to recognize meter malfunctions and perform required maintenance, repair, or replacement.
Experience in the operation of light equipment desirable but not necessary.
Mechanical aptitude with knowledge of hand tools and plumbing procedures.
Good customer service and communication skills for dealing directly with the public.
Understanding of plumbing fittings i.e., dual, and double backflow devices, pressure reducing valve (PRV) etc.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision.
Minimum Training and Experience Required

High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license.
Capable of medium to heavy physical work including lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching.
Submit to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as well as a willingness to submit to periodic, random drug and alcohol testing.
No record of convictions or ARD dispositions for driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
No record of felony conviction, and a willingness to submit to a criminal background investigation.
