Job Description Summary
The purpose of this job is to diagnose and maintain vehicles, including preventive and light duty electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Services, diagnoses, and repairs city vehicles and equipment to ensure safe working condition.
  • Conducts and documents motor vehicle inspections for all city equipment. Maintains accurate records.

  • Adheres to proper safety protocols.

  • Assists fleet personnel and other departments as needed.

  • Maintains knowledge of current technology.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • No supervisory authority. Work does require providing guidance and training to others.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • 2-year technical degree or three years of journey-level experience in vehicle repair and maintenance.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no airbrake restriction within 6 months of hire.

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.

  • Missouri Motor Vehicle Inspector License within 6 months of hire.

  • Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Equipment Certification within 6 months of hire.

  • Incumbents may be required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.


  • Incumbents frequently required to feel attributes of objects in order to check parts for wear; grasp tools; push to move shop equipment; stand to service heavy equipment; walk; drive; reach with hands/arms to make various repairs; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl to inspect a vehicle; and move up and down from/to a sitting position on the floor to work under vehicles.

  • This position requires clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, ability to identify/distinguish colors, and precise hand-eye coordination in order to perform visual inspections to discover failed parts and components and to follow wiring diagrams to perform diagnosis.
