Nurse Intern

Summary:

Assists with and provides infant through adult patient care under the direction of the Nurse Manager or assigned RN-Clinical Nurse. Performs only those skills listed in the Record of Activity of Orientation (RAO). Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

Required:

  • Enrolled in an accredited Nursing Program (BSN or ADN)
  • Completed fundamentals of nursing, and is currently enrolled in clinicals.
  • Continuous enrollment in a BSN or ADN program
  • Current AHA BLS for the healthcare provider certification or obtains within 90 days of hire.
  • Eligibility to continue in position for a maximum of 6 months after graduation from nursing school


Physical Requirements/Demands:

  • May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day.
  • May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
  • Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
  • Ability to lift 250-300 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 500 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.
  • Requires some exposure to chemicals and cleaning products.

Responsibilities:
1. Contributes to patient safety by:

  • Providing a safe environment for patients. 
  • Reporting safety concerns, errors and near misses. 
  • Participating in system improvement initiatives to prevent errors. 
  • Providing evidence-based care as applicable to the role. 

2. Provides general patient care support in a caring, tactful, and courteous manner under all circumstances under the direction of the Nurse Manager or assigned RN-Clinical Nurse. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Distributing water, nourishment, and meal trays. Assisting patients to eat and drink, including enteral feedings on established systems. 
  • Bathing and assisting patients with all aspects of personal hygiene.
  • Obtaining temperatures, pulse, blood pressure and respiration, and other parameters as instructed and recording findings.
  • Answering signal lights.
  • Observing patients throughout tour of duty by performing purposeful hourly rounding and reporting changes to the professional nurse.
  • Maintaining patient rooms. Assembling supplies, equipment, and prosthesis for patient’s own use. Cleans, collects, disposes, or stores same.
  • Collecting specimens. Labels containers and dispatches specimens with requisitions to designated areas.
  • Assisting with admissions and discharges.
  • Transporting and /or accompanying patients to other departments.
  • Performing and recording treatments including but not limited to: simple sterile dressings, urinary catheterizations (Rehabilitation units only), irrigations, perineal care, application of heat or cold, placement of oxygen administration device, intake and output.
  • Emptying drainage containers and recording output.
  • Performing safety and comfort measures for patients, utilizing pressure relieving devices, restraints, range of motion exercises, protective dressings, etc.
  • Preparing the body after death.
  • Assisting with examinations and treatments.
  • Demonstrates adherence to policies related to the safe handling of hazardous/infectious wastes and materials; upholds standards of universal precautions.

3. Performs duties related to indirect patient care by:

  • Conducting inventory of patient belongings upon admission and completing documentation. 
  • Setting up, collecting, labeling, recording, and transporting specimens.
  • Maintaining a safe and neat environment in all patient care areas and any reporting safety hazards.
  • Preparing, cleaning, and calibrating equipment as needed.
  • Performing general cleaning duties as needed.
  • Emptying waste baskets and linen hampers and replacing bags.

4. Performing phlebotomy and ECG acquisition after successful completion of MetroHealth training and competency testing.

5. Documenting findings in electronic medical record.

6. Collaborates with other members of the health care team by:

  • a. Maintaining confidentially and exhibiting a cooperative and collaborative attitude. 
  • b. Participating in change-of-shift reports.
  • c. Communicating pertinent information appropriately.
  • d. Initiating adverse occurrence reports as indicated.
  • e. Reinforcing patient education
