Summary

The King County’s Building Operations Section (BOS) within Facilities Management Division (FMD), is currently looking to hire a Painter who wants to be part of a team that prides themselves at providing excellent customer service to our King County customers. This position is part of our Paint/Sign Shop and will be responsible for performing journey-level painter duties such as prepping and painting interior and exterior surfaces and fulfilling sign work orders.

 

This position requires the capability to respond to shifting priorities all while accomplishing daily tasks in a safety sensitive work environment. The painter must have strong communication skills to interact, collaborate, and prioritize problems with coworkers, customers, and management in a demanding fast paced environment.

Job Duties

SCOPE OF JOB DUTIES

In order to be considered for this exciting opportunity, the successful candidate at minimum will demonstrate skill and ability to: 

  • Perform journey-level painting activities including interior/exterior facility.

  • Conduct duties in a calm, professional, and efficient manner under close supervision.

  • Prepare a variety of surfaces and apply various coatings to both interiors and exteriors of buildings and facilities, amenities, equipment, and furnishings.

  • Operate, clean, and maintain various pieces of equipment.

  • Operate equipment such as high lift, scissor lift, forklift, striping machine, paint sprayer and power tools.

  • Finish drywall with various texture techniques.

  • Ensure proper use, storage, handling, and disposal of all hazardous, chemical, and paint materials.

  • Document maintenance and repair activities on work orders and maintain detailed paint logs in our Maximo work order system.

  • Provide technical assistance and advice to coworkers and supervisors.

  • Be available for mandatory overtime as needed and to perform other duties as assigned.

  • Use and carry a King County issued cell phone for communications.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

 OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Completed a verifiable apprenticeship program or equivalent program and at least three years of full-time paid experience as a journey-level painter, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of preparing, mixing, blending, harmonizing, and contrasting colors, and occupational hazards and materials and tools of the painting trade.

  • Knowledge of paints, varnishes, enamels, paint removers and their properties and application.

  • Ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing and follow directions.

  • Skill in selecting proper materials, mixing, and matching paints, and applying paints and other finishes with brushes or spray guns.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, and tools of the painting trade 
  • Ability to be organized on the job site, in the shop and in an office setting.
  • Skill in working at heights from ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including, bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, and twisting on a regular basis.

  • Familiarity with using or the ability to learn sign creation software.

Supplemental Information

ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:

  • This position is open to ALL qualified candidates.

  • This position has been designated Mission Critical, which means that you provide for and maintain critical functions of county services that must remain operational, but may not be critical to the emergency response. In the event of an emergency, you must report for work as directed by your management or your immediate supervisor/lead.

  • This position reports to the King County Courthouse in Downtown Seattle, however, may be relocated to other locations such as the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, WA.

  • The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
  • We are also creating a hiring list for any future positions that become available in the next 12 months.
  • These positions are non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and are therefore overtime-eligible.
  • Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek; schedule and work location are to be determined.
  • Incumbents in these positions are represented by the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades District Council 5.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon successfully passing a thorough federal and county background investigation and clearing a pre-employment physical examination.
