Basic Job Summary: The overall purpose of this job is to provide technical and laboratory support to the ARCT, CIVT, IDT programs and ENS courses as well as provide support in summer to other areas in Engineering Technologies if necessary.
Essential Job Functions:
35% Setup, assist, develop, and instruct laboratory sessions (with possible flexing of schedule to include evening classes and labs). Assist faculty and students in the use of laboratory equipment and software.
15% Operate, maintain and repair a variety of laboratory equipment in the areas of CIVT (Civil Engineering Technology) and ENS (Engineering Science).
15% Order and maintain an inventory of equipment, supplies, and software. Maintain site/lab licenses for CIVT, Architectural Design Technology, Interior Design Technology, and ENS software. Dispose of obsolete equipment, software and hazardous waste generated in laboratories. Track budget expenditures and process paperwork.
10% Work with information services to set-up, operate, and maintain PC’s and related equipment. Instruct faculty and students in the use of equipment and software. Monitor the open computer laboratory and provide assistance to students.
10% Work with faculty, other technicians and other College personnel to offer specialty offerings such as workshops and camps.
5% Supervise work study and other student employees as necessary
10% Other duties as assigned. Assist in preparation of lecture materials (PowerPoint slides, graphics and photocopies). Assist in preparation and update of web based courses and course materials.. Conduct lab tours and demos.

Key Result Areas: Order supplies, equipment and materials in time for use by faculty/students in the courses that require them. Maintain timely setup and/or equipment preparation for class and laboratory sessions. Ensure that necessary software is requested for load and that program specific licensing is current for each semester.
Job Requirements:
An Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology or related field from an accredited institution OR the ability to obtain an Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology or related field from an accredited institution within (1) year of initial employment date and a minimum of 5 years related work experience,
OR,
A high school diploma/GED equivalent and 7 years related work experience with the ability to obtain an Associate of Applied Science in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology or related field from an accredited institution within (5) years of initial employment date (candidates must take 6 credit hours per academic year).
Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time work experience.

The position requires a considerable amount of analytical and technical skills to carry out the responsibilities. Institution policies and procedures are available for purchasing, disposal of equipment and software etc. but often require additional information/interpretation for the particular situation. Occasionally industry/professional (ASTM, ASME, TDOT etc.) standards are helpful in the set-up and use of equipment.
Judgement & Decisions:
Employee makes decisions relating to the set-up and operation of ARCT, CIVT, IDT and ENS labs, the purchase, maintenance and calibration of equipment and the purchase of software and supplies. The employee also works in collaboration with colleagues to make decisions regarding the disposal of obsolete equipment, software, and supplies. Most decisions can be made without referral to a supervisor but usually involve some consultation with affected faculty.
Physical Demands:
A portion of the workday is spent in an office in front of a computer. Lab setups require walking between classrooms and storage areas often carrying equipment. Lab setups also require moving tables, chairs and bulky equipment such as concrete mixers. Five gallon pails of aggregates and soil (50-60 lb) must be obtained and stored. Some outdoor work is also required to support land surveying courses. Teaching a lab also involves standing and walking.
Must be able to communicate with faculty, other staff, students and vendors. Must be able to hear beeps and other instrument sounds. Instrument setup sometimes involves precise positioning and/or measurement. Using drafting software requires the ability to differentiate multiple layers in a drawing, the layers are usually represented by different colors and/or symbols.
Hazards: Possible injury from tool use, lifting/moving aggregate (~50-60 lbs), lifting/moving concrete cylinders and beams, moving furniture and/or equipment for lab setups. The frequency of exposure is daily to weekly. The probability of injury is low with proper techniques and protective equipment.
