Job Description

The IT Systems and Support Manager serves as a subject matter expert, support provider, and partner for faculty, staff, and students within the Department of Engineering Education. The department plays a critical role within the College, functioning as the first engagement point for undergraduate students entering engineering and serving as home to a strong graduate program that strives to improve the way engineers are educated, both at Virginia Tech and around the world. As a result, the department has a robust existing IT infrastructure that supports teaching, learning, research, and administration for a significant (100+ systems) workforce. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the IT Systems and Support Manager is responsible for seamlessly continuing existing IT operations while working in partnership with department members and other stakeholders to prepare for and take advantage of strategic opportunities presented by advances in technology, best practices, and/or in College and University IT services, systems, or structures.
The role’s major areas of responsibility include:
● Systems administration: includes endpoint and asset management for all department computing equipment, systems, software, etc. This role scopes, prepares orders, manages, and maintains departmental IT infrastructure (e.g., networks, computer systems, conference room IT systems) used in teaching, research, and administration. 
o Associated activities include overseeing IT security and compliance, implementing hardware and software upgrades, maintaining software and site licenses, designing and overseeing policies and procedures related to IT infrastructure and inventory, and tracking IT inventory.
● IT support: provides very responsive assistance to faculty, staff, and students. This includes both traditional desktop support as well as assisting department members in identifying and making appropriate connections to appropriate IT resources outside the department, where needed.
● Liaising with College and University IT groups: maintain awareness of College and University best practices, service offerings, etc.; interface with College and University IT personnel; and serve as a connection point between the department and other IT service providers. This role may also supervise and train wage or student employees to provide additional IT capacity for the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Several years of relevant work experience as either an IT systems administrator or advanced desktop support provider.
  • Experience providing advanced IT support to end users, preferably in a university setting. Knowledge of, and ability to troubleshoot, areas such as desktop operating systems (Windows and Macintosh OSX) and hardware, applications, peripherals, telecommunications failures (telephone, LAN, WAN, and TCP/IP), A/V equipment, videoconferencing, etc., in a logical and systematic manner.
  • Experience with endpoint management. Examples might include ensuring file and system backups and updates; managing software upgrades and software license management; overseeing and remediating security patching, antivirus, and PII scanning; and designing and deploying consistent system images.
  • Experience with Windows systems administration and Windows Active Directory.
  • Working knowledge of networking and security principles and tools.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact empathetically with end users via a variety of platforms, including over the phone, via online incident management platforms, and in person.
  • Ability to operate independently and without supervision as well as with assigned teams to accomplish organizational goals and objectives. Self-starter with ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with documentation and sharing of processes and procedures.
  • Commitment to servant leadership and ability to cultivate a partnership-based IT environment.

Preferred Qualifications

B.S. degree in Business Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent level training or job experience.
Experience with UNIX/Linux.
Experience with server management and maintenance.
Knowledge of database web applications using PHP/MySql would be a plus.
