DEAN OF STUDENTS REPORTS TO: Middle School Principal

SUPERVISES: Student behavior

JOB GOAL: The goal of the Dean of Students is to assist in the overall operation and maintenance of school and implementation of the Code of Conduct in order to provide a safe and orderly learning environment for students, faculty and staff under the supervision of the Middle School Principal.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

1. Maintain school and student records related to student behavior.

2. Provide guidance for teachers in addressing issues related to student behavior.

3. Participate in the development, modification, maintenance and implementation of a Student Code of Conduct for the building assigned.

4. Collaborate with the Middle School Principal in the articulation of a consistent Student Behavior Management Plan.

5. Work with staff to follow through on student behavior incidents, referrals and interventions.

6. Assist the Middle School Principal in interpreting the district and school educational and behavioral expectation program for staff, parents and the community.

7. Complete reports on student behavior incidents handled by the Dean of Students.

8. Supervise and manage student behavior throughout the Middle School.

9. Participate in PPS meetings; serve as a resource on issues of student behavior and conduct.

10. Provide visible and effective leadership for students; actively model the principles of the district’s Code of Conduct.

11. Supervise students during lunch, hall duty, dismissal, after school and other times designated by the Middle School Principal.

12. Promote early intervention and/or make referrals for students having difficulties to the appropriate PPS staff members or community agencies.

13. Counsel/interact with individual students on behavioral issues.

14. Participate in enforcing school and classroom behavioral norms.

15. Conduct individual conferences with parents, and/or staff, and/or students to address issues that arise with particular students on behavioral issues.

16. Assist the Middle School Principal in carrying out student disciplinary hearings and suspensions.

17. Follow-up on students who fail to report for detention or in-school suspension.

18. Collaborate with the Middle School Principal in the daily management of a safe school environment.

19. Assist in the preparation of district student behavior reports, as assigned by the Middle School.

20. Collaborate with the Administrative Cabinet, Program Principals and PPS staff.

21. Initiate the improvement of safety and the culture of the school.

22. Pursue personal professional development.

23. Collaborate with the Middle School Principal in developing annual goals and objectives.
