Summary: 

Performs support duties in several settings including post-mortem examinations, surgical pathology specimen accessioning, frozen sections and histology tasks. Establishes and maintains good client relations, especially with funeral homes, by presenting a professional manner at all times. Develops the ability to prioritize work while maintaining an acceptable level of productivity with a high degree of multi-tasking.

Job Responsibilities: 

1) Assists the prosector with post mortem examinations to include evisceration, preparation and fixation of organs and removal of brain. Retrieves chart and reviews authorization for required signatures, reviews restrictions and verifies patient's name. Prepares all necessary instruments and supplies. Returns body to morgue and cleans autopsy suite at conclusion of post mortem examination. Participates in training of new staff.

2) Accurately performs full/short registration on specimens following all current registration procedures. Accurately enters patient demographics, ordering physician, location and ICD9 code/diagnosis.

3) Accurately and completely enters test orders into the laboratory system, contacting physician or appropriate parties for clarification if order/information is unclear or does not match. Accurately selects and orders tests under appropriate billing case. Enters appropriate comments. Accurately enters information during downtime procedure. Documents all necessary information when contacting physician office for clarification of unclear demographics or test orders and on follow-up forms.

4) Ensures selection of correct patient and episode with 100% accuracy, as well as patient identification and labeling.

5) Organizes and maintains specimen storage areas and coordinates retrieval and disposal of body tissue in accordance with department procedures.

6) Performs filing and retrieval of glass slides and surgical paraffin blocks

7) Learns and becomes proficient in frozen section procedures. Possesses significant technical knowledge of human tissues. Ability to produce quality frozen section slides in an urgent environment. Performs well under pressure and is proactive in handling specimens. Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of discrepancies in frozen section room, alerting appropriate supervisor when necessary, Maintains supplies in the frozen section room,

8) Willingly accepts changes in the work schedule as necessary to accommodate staffing needs.

9) Completes assigned reading/special projects/duties within established time. Completes educational assignments within deadlines. Continues to develop knowledge of medical terminology

10) Follows all guidelines, procedures, policies, laws etc. which apply to specific work area and incorporates changes, additions, etc. into daily routine.

Required Work Experience: 

1) Previous morgue experience or on-the job training in autopsy techniques – a minimum of 2 years is required
