Public Health is accepting applications for Registered Nurse (RN) correctional health positions. All RN vacancies will be filled from the list resulting from this recruitment. Applicants are referred to positions for 3 months and then must reapply. At this time, Jail Health Services is considering nurses with 1 year and greater experience in a relevant area of practice. The best applicant will have hospital experience ER/Psych/Med-Surg, Ambulatory Care or Substance Abuse experience.

Public Health - Jail Health Services follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:
 

  • Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;
  • Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse
  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.

Additionally, PREA standards require that the department consider any incidents of sexual harassment involving an inmate or detainee in determining whether or not to hire or promote anyone.

The above is in compliance with PREA and its implementing regulations, 28 C.F.R. Part 115, Subpart A, Section 115.17, Hiring and Promotion Decisions.

Summary of Practice: These positions are for the registered nurse who wants to work in a stimulating health care environment. You will be joining an interdisciplinary team that provides health care services for clients in the King County Correctional Facilities in Seattle and/or Kent.
 
Schedules: At this time, all Career Service (permanent) positions must be willing to work night shift (2215-0615). Both King County Correctional Facility and Maleng Regional Justice Center are 24/7 operations and reserves the right to make changes to any schedule based on urgent operational needs.

Examples of Duties:
  • Provide nursing assessments and interventions including; medical, dental and psychiatric screening and triage with patients; obtains health history, chief complaint; conducts drug and alcohol withdrawal assessments; patient care planning; evaluation and medical care coordination; carries out prescribed treatments; collects specimens as needed; administers medications and vaccinations; monitors and documents treatment progress and patient response.
  • Provide mental health services, as a member of an interdisciplinary team, to patients with emotional, behavioral, cognitive and social impairments.
  • Refer to or consult with other health providers in person and on the phone.
  • Follow established Public Health medical records policies and procedures and the State and Federal laws that govern the release of health care information.
  • Establish relationships with individuals to promote interactive problem solving and provide patient education.
  • Delegate as allowed under the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Participate and assists in the training and orientation of new health care employees and students.
  • Provide for clinic maintenance of supplies and equipment; maintains a safe environment according to standards of (OSHA/WISHA).
  • Provide patient care based upon practice guidelines, community standards of care, and Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies throughout the facility; injury and illness; performs CPR when needed.
  • Participate in RN on-call system.
  • Maintain professional competence by pursuing opportunities for continuous learning, attending continuing education offerings, reading professional literature, and engaging in other activities which develop new knowledge and skills.
 
Requirements:
  • Requires current Washington State Registered Nurse license in good standing.
  • Associate preparation in nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • The selected candidate must pass a security clearance and/or background check to secure access to the correctional facilities.
  • BLS-CPR for healthcare providers
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License or abiltiy to travel to various sites within Seattle-King County.
  • Willing to work nights based on operational needs

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in a correctional or locked facility.
  • Experience with substance use disorder care
  • Experience in de-escalation techniques
  • Experience in motivational interviewing
  • Demonstrated skill providing physical and mental health assessments.
  • Ability to initiate appropriate crisis intervention and emergency response.
  • Ability to maintain working relationships and ability to work with diverse populations and cultures; ability to engage clients in a care plan.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
  • Bachelor's in Nursing
  • Bilingual and/or bicultural

Necessary Requirements:
  • Documentation of current BLS CPR certification with AED training required at time of hire. CPR/AED Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement.
  • The selected candidate will be required to pass a thorough background investigation.
  • An offer of employment will be contingent on passing a pre-employment physical exam (should be able to lift 50 pounds, move quickly up and down stairs, crouching/bending to perform CPR). Details available upon request.

  • Employees are required to adhere to OSHA/WISHA guidelines including but not limited to completing their mandatory trainings on time.

Public Health relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all Public Health positions.

The person hired into this position will be required to adhere to the policies of the Department of Juvenile and Adult Detention (in addition to those of the Public Health Department) in meeting and maintaining the standards required for continued access to the facility as well as other standards related to conduct.

Staff may be required to play an active role in the event of a public health emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.
