Founded in 2016 as a 501c(3) public charity, the SUNY Impact Foundation Inc. was established to facilitate partnerships between the philanthropic community and the SUNY system. The Foundation enables private support of high-impact programs. By leveraging investments from the private sector, the Foundation supports student, faculty, and campus success beyond that which can be funded by New York State public funds.


Job Description:

The State University of New York (SUNY) seeks a strategic, visionary, and collaborative leader to serve as the Executive Director for the SUNY Impact Foundation for the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States.  It is an exciting time to join SUNY, and under the leadership of Chancellor John King, the Executive Director will join a highly collaborative team working to set policy, advance the Chancellor's strategic priorities, and build an extensive constituent network, engaged with upholding the mission of the State University of New York (SUNY).

The newly appointed SUNY Chancellor has identified philanthropic partnerships as a key growth as a key growth opportunity in fulfilling SUNY's mission of equity and excellence, as a driver of economic and social mobility, and as a system at the forefront of groundbreaking research. The Executive Director will play an important role in developing and implementing fundraising strategy to advance SUNY's leadership in these critical areas. 

The Executive Director will be responsible for leading the effort to cultivate and solicit major, principal, planned, corporate, and foundation gifts, as well as prospect research, at the System level. The ideal candidate will personally identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects for major gifts and/or partnerships as defined by SUNY's standards through visits and other forms or direct contact for development, represent SUNY to various external institutional constituents (i.e., corporations, foundations, funding agencies, government agencies, etc.) as appropriate, and engage with SUNY leadership, faculty, and staff across SUNY campuses to articulate strategy for development of partnerships and collaborations in order to enhance SUNY's mission, and liase with campus constituents to optimize philanthropic opportunities across the system. 

The Executive Director of the Impact Foundation will be responsible for the strategic and operational management of the Foundation and use data analytics to drive decision making and budget and policy development in order to inform senior leadership as well as other stakeholders.  In coordination with the Foundation's Board of Directors, the Executive Director will set policy for the Foundation's fundraising and oversee the annual and long-range program planning and goal setting for the Foundation. The Executive Director will implement a continuous improvement philosophy that includes benchmarking programs, peer-based performance metrics, and outcomes that support high performance standards.

The Executive Director will oversee the development and implementation of external and internal communications plans regarding Impact Foundation activities, coordinate and facilitate regular communication among internal and external stakeholders, evaluate and balance fundraising priorities to reflect the interests of current and newly identified donors, and manage, draft, review, and edit philanthropic agreements and other documents, and coordinate the review process for legal documents while working closely with senior leadership, the SUNY General Counsel, and external counsel as needed.

The Executive Director will provide strategic policies and procedures to the Chancellor, develop, and manage the Foundation's annual operating budget, ensure compliance with annual auditing, reporting, and filing requirements, and manage and direct the Foundation's prospect management system. The Executive Director will be responsible for negotiating the terms and conditions for philanthropic donations and agreements with external entities aligned with SUNY's mission and vision, lead and participate in meetings with potential donors and collaborators.

Motivator:  Someone who understands the principles and processes of corporate, foundation, and alumni giving who can advance new messages, strategies, and standards of giving that will excite philanthropic and partnership constituents.   

Visionary:  Someone who is aware of best practices and current trends of philanthropy in higher education.  As an experienced leader, the Executive Director will be expected to cultivate a spirit of transparency, accountability, and collaboration. 

Architect:  Someone who has significant experience with major capital campaigns in higher education and is able to bring new and best practices to SUNY; as the System engages in unprecedented efforts and gains in fundraising and partnerships. 

Team Player:  The ideal candidate will collaborate well with leaders at the System and the Campuses, driving collaboration, in building external support that will enable SUNY to thrive in years to come. 

Strategist:  Someone with a significant track record of success and ability to share a compelling case for SUNY, develop relationships with internal and external groups, and the ability to convey to diverse audiences why SUNY is uniquely qualified for significant investment and partnerships. 

Communicator:  The Executive Director must be adept at formulating a narrative that conveys SUNY success stories enabling social mobility, and effectively portrays SUNY as an intellectually vibrant epicenter for teaching, learning, research, and leadership and workforce training in diverse disciplines. 

Catalyst:  Someone who has the capacity, desire, and commitment to engage and travel extensively on behalf on SUNY cultivate a variety of stakeholders and prospective donors. 

Change Agent: The Executive Director must have the ability to think well outside of the box and can identify and engage supporters with an inclination towards innovation and sustainability.   

Steward:  Someone who is experienced and committed to maintaining responsible stewardship protocols such as timely gift acknowledgements, post-award report submission, and excellent donor records management.  The candidate must have familiarity with CRMs, online giving programs, and other associated technologies. 


Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree is required; advanced degree and professional experience in higher education is preferred. Preference given to those candidates with experience in higher education philanthropy. 

Other requirements include fundraising experience with a successful track record in major and principal gifts and campaigns; project management is a plus. Excellent oral and written communications skills, facilitation, and good organizational skills are essential. Work requires business development, analytical, financial and program management skills normally acquired through at least 7 years progressive experience. 

The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented fundraising professional with an established track record of diverse and progressively more sophisticated advancement experience; capital campaign planning, management, and implementation experience; and an executive level of supervisory and managerial experience, preferably in a higher education setting. Must possess excellent interpersonal and presentation skills needed to represent SUNY's interests to a wide spectrum of constituent groups, consortia, and collaborative partners.  The success candidate will be equally adept with prospect research; gift processing software; online giving strategies; traditional and new media and other emerging technologies that will optimize SUNY's outreach to potential supports. Fundamentally, an ability to connect with potential supports, matching their commitment to serve and invest, in the mission and vision of SUNY. 


Additional Information:

Salary: After a year in the role, this position should be fully self-supporting. Excellent Benefit Package which includes; NYS health insurance, free dental and vision, competitive retirement options, tuition assistance and generous vacation, sick and holiday accruals.

The Executive Director will be based in Albany, New York, traveling frequently as required.
