Summary:

JOB OBJECTIVE:

The Perioperative RN provides patient care, cooperating with the physician, nursing staff and other personnel; implements the nursing process, following standards and practices and serves as the patient advocate during procedures.Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and be currently licensed by the State Board of Nurse Examiners.Membership in a professional organization is encouraged. Desired candidate must possess good physical health, required to stand for long periods of time.Lifting and transporting of patients is required.Motor coordination and manual dexterity are necessary.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

1.The Perioperative RN is responsible and accountable for the delivery and documentation of patient care during the perioperative period.

2.Fiscal Management

A.Utilizes supplies and materials in a cost effective manner.

B.Monitors levels of inventory in accordance with established desired quantities.

C.Supports coordinator in meeting budgetary and productivity goals

3.Standards of Nursing Practice

A.Provides quality patient care as outlined in the AORN & ASPAN Standards of Care, department’s policies and procedures and North Oaks Standards of Practice.

B.Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient’s served.He/She shall be able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group.

C.Addresses and supports cultural practices as long as such practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical therapy.

D.Successfully complete yearly competency labs.

4.Operational Functions

A.Assists in the orientation, teaching and evaluation of new employees.

B.Ensures individual skills are current by attending relative and educational programs.

C.Assist department Coordinators in maintenance of policies and procedures.

D.Schedule assignments of personnel as applicable.

E.Assists Charge Nurse as assigned.

F.Responsible for patient/family teaching and documentation on patient/family interdisciplinary tool and discharge instructions.

G.Notifies Charge Nurse or Unit Coordinator of any changes in patient’s condition.

H.Assists with pain management services as assigned.

I.Demonstrate quality leadership abilities.

J.Function as “Agents of Change”, serves as mentors for nurses desiring to work at the Surgery Center.

K.Completes “Pain Assessment” on all patients.Instructs patient on use of pain scale.

L.Provides care in the OR, PACU, and Preoperative areas as assigned.

5.Surgical Services Environment

A.Maintains a safe environment by adherence to safety principles.

B.Participates in departmental fire and disaster.

C.Complies with infection control guidelines.

D.Initiates the pre-op verification policy and checklist.

E.Accurately records information that reflects peri-operative nursing care given by the members of the nursing team including “Marking the operative site”.

F.Documents activities other than direct nursing care that may affect the patient’s outcome.

G.Is cognizant of the need for special handling of surgical instruments and equipment, according to policy.

H.Using doctor’s preference cards assembles equipment and supplies according to procedure.

I.Organizes and plans ahead for scheduled procedures to insure optimal patient care.

J.Uses knowledge available to handle emergency situations with skill and speed.

K.Utilizes supplies and materials in a cost effective manner.

L.Monitors levels of inventory in accordance with established quantities.

6.Maintains a safe environment by implementing technical and aseptic practice.

A.Assembles equipment necessary for procedure.

B.Monitors traffic in the Operating Room.

C.Assists and directs good aseptic techniques for all members of the surgical team.

D.Applies principles of body alignment and adapts them to carrying situations during positioning.

E.Complies with the Operating Room policy and procedure for sponge, needle and instrument count.

F.Complies with AORN standards regarding confinement and containment.

G.Knows and applies principles of sterilizer function.

H.Supports the Universal Protocol (verification of correct patient, procedure and site).

7.Performance Improvement/Development

A.Assists in the identification of patient related potential problem areas for referral for quality review.

B.Monitors established quality review indicators for compliance as assigned.

C.Participates as assigned in the department Performance Improvement Committee.

D.Attends committee meetings as designated.

E.Attends in-service programs.

F.Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings.

G.Demonstrates interest in professional literature and nursing trends.

H.Assist in data collection and report writing as applicable.

D.Laser Safety Specialist duties:

·Supervising laser usage in a room

·Acting as a liaison between the clinical laser users and the LSO

·Troubleshooting equipment problems

·Monitoring compliance with the health care organization’s laser policies and procedures

·Reviewing laser-related documentation (eg, logs, laser manufacturer’s directions)

·Acting as a resource to staff members and laser users

·Assessing needs for continuing education and training

12.Follows North Oaks Health System’s Compliance Programs and all Federal and State regulatory guidelines.

13.Able to demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope

14.Membership in A.O.R.N. encouraged.
